what am2 board does he have? that will determine what chips he can upgrade to. some am2 motherboards have bios support all the way through the new am3 chips. also need to check max tdp of the socket and what kind of power phase.

Agreed, there is no point in going to a stopgap CPU with prices for decent hardware so low. Just get the new mobo and CPU as funds allow and then upgrade.
