Pentium D performance issue - Help

Hey guys,

I wanted to ask you people for some advice about my friend's secondary rig, which we plan on using for gaming.

Well here's the situation: We're going to have a Lan party at my friend's house soon, and one of us has a really crappy computer. Since the rest of us have good rigs, My friend is going to let him use his secondary rig. It's not that good too, but It's fairly decent for gaming.
The rig is a :
-Pentium D 2.8GHz
-Some 775 Gigabyte mobo which is locked for OCing
-2.5GB DDR2 RAM
-Palit 9800GT 1GB OCed

When trying to play Napoleon total war, the system lags pretty badly, prolly because of the CPU. It's fine in 1v1 fights for example but We really wanna play this together in 4v4 and it gets much heavier, and his system is holding us back (needless to say, our rigs handle it without a problem). Since the mobo is locked, I can't really OC the CPU, we tried OCing the 9800GT and maybe we can try the memories but that's about it. Even when turning the graphics all the way down the lag doesn't get much better.

Do you guys have any ideas? or did we really hit a dead end here?

The bottleneck in your system is definately at the CPU, does the motherboard support any newer Core 2 Duo CPU's?

If not, have you tried running the game at a lower resolution?

The very annoying/sad thing is, my Friend has a C2Q Q9550 laying around and he can't use it cuz the mobo simply doesn't support it. And no he can't afford a new mobo so don't take it as an option

Turning the resolution down helps alil but not enough.

Try turning the res UP and the AA up to elimate that CPU bottleneck.

Turning res down only makes it worse, you got to put more stress on the GPU so the CPU doesn't have to go through all those FPS.

More FPS = more load on CPU too.

Tell me something guys, will this mobo support a Pentium D 2.8GHz?
http://gigabyte.com/products/product...aspx?pid=3505#

My friend wants to buy it but he can't be sure his Q9550 is still working so in case it isn't working he'd still wanna use the D on it. What do you say?

well tell him to sell the dang Q9550 and use the money to get like an e7200 and motherboard. Problem solved

only other solution is to get a higher clocked Pentium D if the chipset doesn't support Conroe or Wolfdale.

I asked in the post above about a mobo, can you check the post out?
