Lag in Darksiders..

Thread Starter
It's not FPS drops caused by my video card, it's actual pauses in the game for a second or two. It'll happen every couple of minutes and it's driving me crazy. I'm not using my sig rig, I enjoy playing this game from my couch on my HTPC. The HTPC surpasses the recommended requirements so does anyone have any ideas? Tried different drivers to no avail. Just for kicks I installed Dirt 2 to compare and Dirt 2 runs great, I would imagine that is a much more demanding game.

HTPC Specs:
Athlon X2 4600+ (2.4GHz)
Sapphire 4850 1GB HDMI
Patriot Gaming RAM 4GB
WD Black 1TB

Odd...

I wonder if it is trying to load data off the HDD and is getting bottlenecked. Is your HDD led active during the pauses?

Or maybe the pauses are points where the game is saving a checkpoint? I've never played the game, so I don't know how the save system works.
Probably some other program accessing the HDD randomly. You might not see it in Dirt 2 because it doesn't access the disk as frequently as Darksiders does.

This is a total guess mind you. But thats what it sounds like your describing. Random pauses are often from hitting some bottleneck in the system, and with some games the disk is that bottleneck.

edit: like that poster up there said too tongue.gif

I do not have the HDD LED hooked up as it's pretty bright and takes away from watching movies in the dark.

The HDD is a fairly fast HDD so I wouldn't think thats it but I suppose it could be. I also tried JC2 and DMC4 and neither of these did it either.

Its a good drive but it still might be getting thrashed. Check your background programs & run a good defrag program before ruling out the hdd imo. http://www.mydefrag.com/

I've checked for any unusual background programs and didn't notice anything. The HDD is set to defrag automatically once a week.

Run a real defrag utility and see if it helps. If you try mydefrag choose the monthly cleanup. It might take a few hrs depending on how scattered your drive is. Yes I know win7 does a pretty good job keeping files optimized but the tech support nerd in me wants to know this fixes your problem... I can't imagine what would be causing pauses except the HD being accessed. But I'm always willing to learn something new!

I never figured it out. I do have the same issue with Alice despite being pegged at 60fps, so I know it's not an fps drop. I'm almost wondering if the HDD is defective. I upgraded to a 560ti on my HTPC and it still does it so it's unrelated to the GPU. Possibly the HDD is getting warm? The CPU and GPU are not real hot but the CM 360 elite does not have a fan in front of the HDD so it might be a possibility..

A case upgrade is on the list so I guess time will tell.
