with both side's offering's and what people see as 'value' as 'value' is subjective

no company is better then the other.

a GTX 480 run's hot. it is loud. but would crap over a single 6870. the end result is HIGHER performance. so why wouldnt someone get this card.. it performs better
I woulden't.... My power bill will go through the roof

definitely get a gtx 580 but if I'm gonna build a computer now I'd prolly buy two 6950's and unlock them to full 6970's as I've read success rate is rather high. even a shop here in Manila unlocks it for you, stress tested already. I should've gotten them instead but hey, I love my 6870 twins

Ok, I admit I am a fanboi, I won't deny it.

Ok putting my fanboyism aside, they are both great cards. Whichever one you choose you will be happy with. The 6970 will have a lower power draw then the 580. I would say if you are just gaming, go for the AMD. The only place where CUDA shines is for encoding 25GB Blu-Ray's, It would take pretty long on just CPU. Also, I have to admit that you will have a lot of fun overclocking that 6970. I had a 5870 and was surprised how well it performed. I could easily gain 20% on air, never water-cooled that, wasn't hot enough.

Iv'e had worse nightmare's from Nvidia driver's then amd's...

Yet im not a fanboi.

AMD scales better. wether or not this is from better driver's or not is for grab's.

However the achilles heel of amd driver's are multi-gpu set up's. that being said. the scaling speak's for it self

Its not a matter of being a fanboy to simply state that Nvidia offers more software incentive than Ati does.

What scales better?

If he is going to get at 6970, then he should just buy a 6950 and flash it to a 6970.

all video card's are solid when their is only one of them.

Driver issue's are virtually non existant in a single gpu configuration.

my 6870's in crossfireX bench higher against a single GTX 580 with better minimum and average FPS.

test's were in farcry 2 crysis and metro 2033.

i scored higher. the 580 was at 900MHZ core.

2X 6870's can beat ANY single solution. and my rig isnt anything special. if your rig is set up correctly with dual GPU's u can and will be rewarded with performance.

Crappy amd driver's? no i havent had ANY issue what so ever to speak of. in fact. amd has always been nice to me in terms of graphics

nvidia driver's iv'e had to much stuttering and performance and crashing issue's ( my fault i was a TRI SLi maniac )

i stand by AMD for well priced card's that offer amazing performance with high energy and heat efficiency

i stand by Nvidia for a plethora of feature set, and proven performance though the year's.

Still, fanboism aside, I'd definitely go with the 580, just a better card all around.

EDIT: Yoko, you yourself are starting to sound like a fanboi. You keep promoting AMD. Ok, two 6870's are faster than a single 580, I don't see what your trying to prove. I would stop calling others fanbois until you yourself can prove you are not just as bad. All of your posts have protected AMD, while everyone else has recommended the 580. I think that says something. Of course, we at OCN are open to suggestions, but calling everyone a fanboi isn't a suggestion, it's an accusation. Please, everyone, stop bashing these two companies and just state why you think one would be better, with Pro's, not the other one's Con's.

Yeah, I'm with Yoko.

Liking one company more than another is perfectly fine. Trying to force your opinion of either company onto another person, not fine.

my vote is the GTX 580 if price is no object.

my reason for this suggestion: PROVEN Performance. it speaks for it self.
