don't play the waiting game. just buy what you can get your hands on. I know many people who just wait but ends up not buying anything at all lol. just buy if it fits your needs. if you feel you need new hardware then go for it. waiting wouldn't do you good imo

I don't think either of the current cards have a scaling problem. IIRC even the HD 5870 has good scaling again. I guess it's just that the 6870s are less bottlenecked than the faster cards. It's hard to keep 2 GTX 580s busy all the time.

@ OP

If you prefer maximum performance get the GTX 580. If you want to trade in some performance for a decent chunk of money, get an HD 6950 and unlock it. No offense mate but seeing you have a mac, you are more of a GTX 580 type

There is a difference in price and performance on these particular cards..(6970 $369 & GTX 580 $500)

if the money is not an issue you may also want to consider GTX 570 SLI ($700), those cards scales even better than the GTX 580s

You Get what you paid !!

If you are going to stay single GPU I would go with the GTX 580, as you can't beat it.

If you ever plan on adding another card in the future, I would absolutely go with the 6970 as the crossfire scaling of these cards are damn near 100% and come within a few FPS of GTX 580 SLI

I'm currently thinking of an i7 2600K @ 3.4GHz, 12GB 1600MHz RAM, 1TB HD, and a 6970 or 580 (w/ 700w PSU).

I like to max my games no matter what I'm playing, I.E, Metro 2033, Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2 -- anything that needs a bit of juice. I'm learning towards the 580 as I think it's more powerful and is pretty good in terms of audible sound and heat tmk, I do understand the 6970 would be a bit quieter and cooler but I don't think it'll be by that much.

I'd rather avoid a SLI or CF setup as I don't like the sound of micro stuttering, and well it isn't exactly in my budget.
I'll only be playing at 1920x1080 for now but I intend to move up to 2560x1440 or 2560x1600.

Appreciate any input! Thanks!

Are you going to be doing a lot of multitasking while playing your games? If not then save yourself the $100 and get the i5 2500k and OC it to 4.6GHz on air and put that extra money towards a GTX580
