Phenom II 965BE C3 temps question

Thread Starter
Hello,

I managed to get a stable overclock with my 965BE C3 under Prime95 with the following setup :
Quote:
Cpu: 965
Username: Phixit
Stepping: C3
Frequency: 3817
ref*multi: 200*19
CPU voltage: 1.456
CPU-NB: 1.4
nb frequency: 2600MHz
NB volts: 1.1
RAM: 4x G.SKILL F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH 7-7-7-21 2T
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3
cooling: Hyper 212+
OS:Windows 7 X64
GFLOPS: 49.9580

I tried to put my CPU-NB to 1.375, but it is not stable in Prime95.

My CPU temps goes up to 58-60 degrees under full load in Prime95 / IntelburnTest with my CPU fan at 100%.

Should I replace my Hyper212+ with a better heatsink ?

Usually, when the temps are higher then 55°C on the PhenomII series, they start to show some errors and sometimes even BSOD.

I had a PhenomII-720@x4 3.5ghz 1.42v cooled by a IceAge Prima Boss, I never saw the temps go above 50°C and I live in Brazil, so the ambient temperature it's kinda hot here.

Another problem that I saw, it's your CPU-NB voltage, for using 24hours the safe voltage it's around ~1.35v. The most CPU's rev.C3 can handle 2.6ghz with no more then 1.30v.
1.4v seems like a lot for CPUNB at only 2600MHz. I can get by on 1.275v for 2800MHz on the 955 C3.
Previous poster was correct about Phenom II instability going above 55c, but it's kinda hit and miss there. Some can go up to 60c under heavy load and still hang in there, but definitely keep it under 62c.

If it's possible, try lowering that CPUNB voltage under 1.4 and up the vcore to 1.5 if temps stay in line. 1.4v+ on CPUNB can really get the temps raging, this is probably where a couple extra degrees is coming from.

To answer your question, if you can't get voltages adjusted a little better and keep stable then a new cooler might put you on the right track.

EDIT: I just noticed you have 4 sticks of RAM. This can make getting the CPUNB stable a little more difficult. Try raising your motherboard's northbridge closer to 1.2v. I don't know for sure, but I've heard this can help with stability as well. Either way, it's worth a shot while toying around with other voltages.

Maybe better heatsink.. With mine Coolink Corator DS @ 965BE 3,8 1.4750V (1.44V on prime) with 2600MHz cpu/nb 1.35V =

max temps under prime95 blend for 10+ hours =

51C

Ambient 23C.

I have a 965 BE C3 paired with a CM Hyper 212+ as well, and I also have mine OC'ed to 3.8GHz. My load temp never breaches 49C when running Prime95 or IntelBurn Test. It idles at around 34C (ambient temp of ~22C).

What I did was simply up my multiplier to x19 -- I didn't even touch the voltages. Everything is stable and running well. For a 3.8GHz overclock, I would suggest that you just up the multiplier alone and see how that runs temperature-wise.

Also, make sure you set your windows power setting to "High Performance," and turn off Cool & Quiet in the bios.

EDIT: Your Hyper 212+ should definitely be adequate for overclocking -- I've had mine for almost 5 months, and I'm very satisfied with the way that it performs.

I didn't manage to get anything stable under 1.4v with the CPUNB at 2600Mhz. I'm doing a Prime95 test right now with CPU @ 3.8GHz 1.4v and stock CPUNB speeds/voltage.

CPUNB overclocking seems to cause instability for me.

Your temps sound the same (and the same voltage as my x4 955 BE C3).

I really doubt all the people who run the NB-freq this high (I run the same 2600 as you and would never give it up) at lower voltages will pass the large FTT test in prime95.

At 1.35v's I was getting BSOD's at 19 hrs. 1.4v's seem to give me 24hr stability.

You might want to just save your money on cooling and buy a newer chip later on. No matter what people say we're still degrading the silicon with additional voltage.

CPU-NB voltages seem to affect my temps greater than CPU voltage. An option is pull in your NB-freq (and volts) to lower temps and push your CPU volts and push the multiplier.

Good luck and temps sounds about right (for the volts you're throwing). If you're willing to run that hot go for it, more power to you (literally). Just make sure you're under 62 degrees or you'll start experiencing CPU throttling due to overheating. I haven't experienced any throttling up to 65 degrees C (from Coretemp) but I stopped testing when it got that hot.

Have you tried loosening your RAM timing and speed? From my stock timing and my OC timing, I need an additional .25 v's on the CPU-NB to stabilize (with all other setting the same).

Hello,

I didn't touch my RAM timing and speed. Same thing with the NB voltage ..

I'm running at 3.8GHz @ 1.4v. Temps are at 49 degrees at full load under Prime for 3 hours.

I have put back my CPUNB voltage/frequency to stock speeds. Should I try to reach 2400MHz ?

Up to you? Depends how hot you're willing to run. If you're willing to play with fire, you'll get more power but you're still playing with fire.

2400 mhz took me about 1.3v's to stabilize (had to also tweak ram settings) which only really means roughly 4-5 degrees drop from your OC temps (or 4-5 degrees higher than your current settings).

In winter I'm willing to run 2600 (I even tried for 2800) but summer time I'm going to tune back.

Good luck and have fun!
