Jackd or Jackd2? A bit confused...

I got Jackd running with Ardour 2.8.11 and OSS4, giving me latencies for jackd around 32msec (could go lower but this is all just test runs). I'm curious though, is there any huge reason why I would rather use Jackd2? I did try it, but it seems they dropped the OSS support and so it doesn't really work with OSS4. =( I'd much rather have OSS4 because the sound quality of ALSA just blows, I mean seriously the high's and mids aren't nearly as clear.

Anyways, mainly I want to know if there is a difference or will I basically be doing the same thing with just a few minor features that I may or may not use?

I ment Jackd1, the original jackd sound server. What's the diff between it and the jackd2 they released. =(

Ok, so some research gives me ALSA card reservation. I've also read that some people seem to like jackd1 over jackdmp/jackd2. =S There is also apparently jackd1 being ported to C++ in the form of jackd3, which might give me OSS support?

lol I got everything working now, jackd1, jack-rack, Ardour, and everything else. I also get 21ms latency being reported, but I highly doubt that. =S lol All this jack crap is way more confusing than plain oss/alsa, but at least it works. I think next I'm gonna work in getting jackd to use oss without locking it, so I can keep it running. =P

[edit] I guess the OSS4 wiki didn't have a way to run jackd without locking OSS. Ahh well, I guess that's why my fav programs have a jack output.... wink.gif

[edit2]

I guess jackd1 is jackd2, just without oss support and a few things like alsa card reservation. I guess there isn't any real major additions as far as usability. =S So I'm just gonna stick with jackd1. =( lol I should just be happy it works.

[edit3] No midi sequencing what so ever, but that's really not anything I care about. My only midi controller isn't supported in either ALSA or OSS, which pisses me off but whatever. I still have to use Win/OSX for it, and that isn't a big deal. If I ever get one supported by ALSA I might end up switching, till then this isn't a half bad solution.

Get LADSPA plugins if you don't have them already. You get parametric EQs and Tube Warmth Emulators and lost of cool stuff from the subtle to drama.

Plus there is a Forum for Ardour in gearslutz.com and the inventor/developer hangs there.

Yeah, jack-rack gives me LADSPA plugin support, plus some plugins. I've already got the EQs and stuff. This is actually much nicer in terms of the jack-rack, it's also giving me an EQ to use system wide. =P I've always hated how both OSS/ALSA never have a full system wide EQ. Well, OSS can but it only supports certain sound cards (like my emu10k1). =) Even more audio sound improvement. It's made me very angry that Audacious has such a crappy EQ.

[edit]

Crap, I take that back. lol I didn't know Audacious can use LADSPA plugins.... [edit for correction]

[edit] Audacious + LADSPA plugins = WIN WIN!!! **** I'd never have found this without venturing into the Jack world!!! Oh, this is super win!

I've never really ventured into using Jack. I've never done any hardcore audio work in Linux, so I've never bothered. Right now I'm using raw ALSA (it supports my card best). Any reason why I should bother looking into if I'm not hardcore into working with audio?

It just seems to have tons of capabilities, but I haven't found a good place that has solid documentation for it.

Yeah jack is kind of more for the enthusiast. =S I wanted it to get it working because occasionally I venture into audio stuff in linux. It's made me super excited though to figure out audacious and the plugins. Honestly you only need it for audio work, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

@jimi you probably have seen this but considering there are lost of hits for "Jack" in search engines and the full name is the unwieldy "Jack Audio Connection Kit" here's the docs fro the home site http://jackaudio.org/documentation

BTW one sweet feature of Jackd is that it in effect analyzes your system to see if you have what it needs. When I ran it on Studio (K)ubuntu it informed me that there was a config file that put a cap on performance that was preventing Jack from running properly and even gave me the changes to make to edit the file. Needless to say performance pretty much everywhere went up, especially in multimedia. Nice, eh?

any news on jack with oss?

trying to get aything that uses midi to work in anything on freebsd

is there some kjind of software midi synth that can stand in for the broken hardware support?
even a dummy one (some software can load plugins or rout midi to something internasl but refuses to play at all - on some software the "transport" locks up and refuses to play anything when theres no hardware midi support even if I'm not using exyternal midi!

what about a fake device driver to rout it to other software?
(like "midi-yoke" on windows - tried that too but it doesn't work in wine)

can't get hold of wineasio .. it seems to have beeen removed in current versions of wine.
and didn't get anywhere trying to compile it - the linux source code doesn't compile on freebsd

its a shame - because the latency on this box is better than anything I tried before
giessing that might be because oss is more direct?

... I would really like to find a workaround for the midi problem!
