Faulty card/PSU? or what I don't know..
You could be right on the edge of your thermal limit, and it doesn't have to be hot. It has to do with voltage/ temps/ core speed these cards seem to have a limit and if you can't cool it down enough they error or shut down. The higher the core speed you want to run the greater your cooling has to be and the lower your thermal limit becomes.
I noticed this when overclocking my 480, at a higher core 850+ I would error when the GPU for into the 90C and after about 6 minutes, but at stock clocks 95C no errors.

I find it works better.

You're also probably better off just picking 3 temps for fan increases. Idle, normal load, then the max temp you would want to see. Constant changing of fan settings can cause weird stuttering.
I much prefer it changing all the time, having it step up randomly will annoy the hell out of me.

Also means on games that don't really load the GPU its quieter than running something that does, which in turn is still quieter than Furmark by a bit.

It can't change randomly since it's set by you. Mine never hits the max load, it's just there in case of emergency. The first one is the idle so it stays there at idle, The second only kicks in when it's above 40(you can set this higher though) and the last one for furmark or something.

Your gpu fan shouldn't be any louder then the rest of your fans so noise shouldn't be an issue.

I kind of wonder if we're talking about the same 470 cooler here.. My reference cooler is so loud - I have a CPU only loop w/ a couple of GTs on the rad, and using the case fans for my Storm Sniper on the front and rear. I like to keep my card running cool, so when it starts to push any sort of considerable FPS, the fan gets loud relatively early -- I start to notice it easily once the fan hits about ~60%, and I can hear it as it ramps up to where it usually settles (closer to 80%).

Yeah, those 470 reference coolers are jet engines.

Mine used to idle around 43 while undervolted to .950 and overclocked to 725 core...anything over 60% is loud and the difference between 100% is almost negligible, which is why I set anything beyond 60c to 100%

And I'm not sure how far OP is willing to push his 470 using 550w
post #37 of 123
It's cool to see I'm not the only person that undervolts (down to .937) and still gets close to 19% free performance improvement. Even keeps the temps down a little (compared to what I needed to get to 850).

I've not had time to really test my card out yet with fan profiles and such but I'm not gonna be pushing it too much on my 550w, worried it might die because I think it's probably on it's limits as it is!

@OP

Your PSU is fine even for an overclocked system. GTX 470s in SLI pull about 550W from the wall in combination with an i7. Just look for yourself. It's displayed in about every GTX 470 SLI review.

EDIT:

I see you have a Corsair VX 550. You have nothing to worry about my friend
