Better shader performance, multi treading, tessellation, which to date has not been used appropriately, It should be used to remove mipmaps, so that the as you closer to an object it gradual increases in polygons, not jumping from 1 mesh to the next better mesh like mip mapping does. Instead it is used to bump up polygons marginally on actors in games, a total waste.
I was under the impression that when close to an object, tessellation provides more detail which makes the games look better, and when far away it efficiently reduces polys? I understand the facepalm if I was wrong.

thats what it does. Which removes the need for parrallex mapping and other resource consuming rendering techniques.

Developers have not been using it for that though, all it has been used for currently is to tack on a slight bit of extra polygons on actors in the game. To date it hasnt been used on the environment or regular objects yet.

Its an incredible amount of work to switch over to something entirely new from the way engine rendering has always been handled.

Tessellation is a computationally cheaper to add texture and/or uniqueness to surfaces.

It makes it easier to "rough" up a surface or shape. It also can make it easier to smooth a low-detail/polygon count shape.

Oh ok. Well that's still really interesting. Every demo of DirectX 11 I've seen I've always thought looked so good. Is that just because the demo was designed to look good, and it's not a fault of DirectX 11? Because I'm almost positive that the Dragon demo looked MUCH better than what I've seen before. The closeup of the stone house looked EXTREMELY detailed.

Yeah you are right, it won't support dx9. Just dx10/11. IMO all games should be like this now. Almost everyone has atleast a dx10 gpu.

Tessellation makes is much cheaper to draw stone. The texture and map of the stone does not have to be explicitly stored. Tessellation will generate the "randomness" of the stone for you.
