Crossfire 2x5870

Thread Starter
I currently have an XFX HD-587X-ZNFV 5870 1gb and found a deal for a used one on Amazon (exact same card) for <$200 which has me contemplating setting up crossfire.

My question is the 5870 is already a pretty fast card would I see enough of a performance increase that it would be worth crossfiring it?

Thanks.

Thanks for the review. Generally play FPS (BC2, COD), some strategy like SC2/Civ, RPG's like Oblivion/Witcher/ME. I've seen some of the reviews but more interested in real world experiences.

I.e. FPS might go from 50-75 but if you can't tell the diff what is the point.

BC2 would see a jump, rest would not. Don't bother.

I have a very similar setup to you (i7 950 at 4.2, SSD, 26.5" 1920 X 1200 monitor) I also had a XFX 5870 and bought a cheap identical card. I am running this sytem in crossfire setup. The difference when playing certain games (BC2) is amazing I can max out all settings and still get 90-120 fps regardless of whats happening on the screen. I guess it depends on your screen resolution and the games you play but this is a very cheap upgrade for the performance increase.

There are TWO drawbacks
*Your power supply will be at about 90% load which is not that good. I had to upgrade my 650w to a 950w to run the cards efficently.
*You will need a big case with good airflow over the graphics cards. (I have a Haf X).

I cannot emphasize this more. My first card loads at 85c while the second card loads at 74c. This is with the fan set to 35%.
