[IN] Microsoft Says Xbox Isn't A Gaming Console. - Page 4

post #31 of 178
If I had to guess, I'd say MS did a recent survey and found that more people would buy PS3 for media purposes and XBOX more for gaming purposes. And so they're just throwing it out there that Xbox can do it too to get a piece of pie.

Way back when I had considered getting a PS3 because of the Blu-ray. Blu-ray players were priced the same and so "why not?" But I never could come up with the money and now a days the players are pretty cheap compared to the price of a PS3 so now it's "why bother?"

Edit:

I was just talking with a group of people yesterday about how we use our 360's more for movies, sports, and TV than gaming. If all the 360 did was play games, I would have sold it years ago, since I rarely do that kind of thing.

My xbox isn't a gaming console, it is a really big paper weight.

But both PS3 and 360 are built as gaming consoles.
Id say that was inaccurate.

Xbox= media/gaming console.
Ps3= media/gaming console.
Wii= living room/garden ornament OR expensive door stop.

You can't be an entertainment center when you charge $130 for a 250GB hard drive and can't play Blu-Ray. The Xbox itself is louder then the media you'll be playing. And under my experience the Xbox plays few file formats. And IMO the GUI is confusing and hard to find stuff through.

EDIT: I've also noticed MS doesn't carry hard drives for Non-Slim Xbox's anymore. So. Much. Greed.

Okay since the majority of you do not get it and can not be bothered to stop and think for a moment I will spell it out for you.

Microsoft wants to be thought of a service provider rather than a software developer. This ties in with the move to cloud computing, especially when you consider a pay-for-use model, which effectively makes computing a utility.

Microsoft don't want you to think of them as the produces of the Xbox or Windows but rather as a company that can provide you with services. This is all part of their "Live" initiative.

For example, they have Live Mail, Live Office, Bing and all it's services (Search, Maps, Videos, Shopping etc.) and Xbox Live (Games, Movies, Xbox Live Marketplace, Music etc.) along with Games for Windows Live and, of course, Windows Azure.

If you consider all of this and the move toward cloud computing it's clear in the future Microsoft wants you to buy into them rather than buy a product of theirs. I.e. You might decide you like Microsoft's service package so you buy a Microsoft TV with it's integration into all of Microsoft's services. This might be on a pay for use model or a subscription based model.

Google are doing the same thing too, as are Amazon. Sony want to be thought of this way as well, but they don't have the software portfolio Microsoft or Google can offer.

It might not be a TV, even more likely it'll be a small console you attach to your router and all the Microsoft services are streamed to you. Whether on your PC or your TV or your iPhone etc.

Since everything is streamed to you, it's effectively a utility. Computing on tap. When you consider the implications of that it no longer becomes a question of you'll buy an Xbox 360 or a PS3 or Windows vs Mac but rather "I prefer Microsoft's service package so I will subscribe to them." and then if Microsoft don't suit your needs you might switch to Google or someone else.

Future implications of this are clear too, effectively it will get to a point where each service provider will offer nearly identical packages, at which point the question becomes not who has the best services, but who gives you the most value out of those services.

I.E. Service providers will data mine you and dynamically change your content to suit your needs. Consider this: Imagine in a business where two people use the same software but for completely different needs and in different ways. If you data mined their usage you could dynamically change the interface to the software package to suit them better.

tl;dr : Microsoft wants you to think of them as service provider, not as a software company.

Man some of you people are so damn ignorant. Just because YOU don't use said product in a certain way does NOT make the statement false. I use my xbox to stream all the media on my pc and laptop and watch it on my tv, couple it with a remote and a tv card and it really is amazing. Stop hating just cos most of you game on a pc.
