WOW might say 12 million players, but the fact is you dont get to play with those 12 million. you get to play with a several thousand. Which is the same as pretty much all other mmos out there.
Popularity also means there are more long term players in the game which is what I was getting at. Veterans to the game know more and tend to be more helpful then 50% of the population running around being newbies and asking the same questions over and over again. Therefore you have a lot of turnover in the game in the newer, unpopular, short lived MMO's out there. The economies and communities are too volatile and tend to be more difficult to adjust to as a newbie. AKA there are a billion guides, wikipedia type sites out there for WoW and LOTRO, the same cannot be said for less popular and new MMO's and it can be a lot harder to figure out what a newbie should do.

All my opinion.

popular mmos by their nature tend to be the most simple games available.

If you seriously need a guide in any of these games something is wrong.

Really, though, are you sure you want to play an MMO? I'm not gonna say the usual spiel of that you're gonna get addicted and whatnot, but if you're at all interested in anything remotely like end-game, there has to be a certain time investment, with any MMO. Don't be surprised if you need to pull 5 hour gaming sessions with the same group, in some of these games, on a regular basis, and if you can't make certain time investments into raiding/group PVP/whatever, the game really won't be worth playing.

Not saying you'll have to pull 5 hours straight each day, but you'll need to be available for 2+ hours straight at points, and if you can't pull that off, good luck doing anything except soloing (and really, if you're doing that, don't play an MMO).

I'm a 6 year vet in WoW and it's been the best MMO for me yet, though not as good as it was during the early years.

No it's not. Rift wants a small tight community across MAYBE 4 servers. They don't expect to compete with wow.

Tetris? You can figure out tactics of any WOW boss by just looking at him? Chuck Norris is that you? Please don't roundkick me if it is you *beg*

WOW got 10 day trial, you can check it out before you buy anything.
I stopped playing wow ~year ago, mainly coz it consumes so much time. Raiding is fun but can't afford those hours to spend on video games
