If you have a powerful desktop, buy a small laptop.

The m11x is a very cool little machine, I've used one and it's the perfect companion to someone who has a powerful gaming system back at home and wants to game on the go.

Cant comment on the hinge problems because mine is so new, but i purchased the extended warranty warranty so it was really a non factor in my buying decision.

I would say get whatever makes you happy, the m11x has a resolution of 1368x768 i believe... not sure what the resolution is on the acer, but i agree with the one poster in that i wouldnt buy a laptop over 15". The 2gb ram on the alienware is easily upgradable, and with ram prices the way they are, pretty cheap as well.

If you have a credit card that extends the warranty by 1 year, i would also use that regardless of the choice you make.

Good luck with your decision.
Thanks for your input it really helped. Hopefully the prices stay the way they are with the M11x's and dont go back up because I might go for it I think.

I was really considering getting an Mx11 until my friend got one and I got to try it out.

Imo, if you need mobile gaming, go for at least a 13".
The convenience of a DVD drive is worth the extra pound of carrying the laptop around.

How often do you actually use a DVD drive?

17" is just too damn big to carry around. AMD mobile chips are garbage, the battery life will probably be horrible on the Acer, Nvidia mobile driver support is worlds better, Acer build quality sucks (I own two of them)... Need I go on?

Care to elaborate? I personally don't care all that much as i already have an m11x (although i am always open to listening to criticism) but "until my friend got one and i got to try it out" isn't really a reason. That being said, the OP might like to hear a more detailed explanation.

I guess i could infer from the remainder of your post your dissatisfaction with the lack of an optical drive could be the reason, however i find that a moot point as i have not had an optical drive in a couple years. Perhaps your issue is with the screen of the m11x being 11.6" over the 13" you mentioned, i might go along with your point as long as the 13" offered a higher resolution than the m11x's 1368x768.

Either way, further explanation, i am sure, would be appreciated.

The price of the m11x i can expect to do nothing but go down for the core2duo models, as well as the i5/i7 models i would imagine. The m17x R3 was announced (released too if i am not mistaken?) and the announcement of an m11x R3 is supposedly possible within the next six months to a year. I would say as a general rule, when a new model is released, it is the best time to buy the previous generation at a greatly discounted price.

Also, if you are not opposed to buying a refurbished model, the dell outlet generally has a good selection of the m11xs. The stock rotates hourly/daily depending on what they get in, so you may find cheaper or better configurations than what you are looking at now. The outlet often runs coupons 15-25% off, i used a 15% off last week when i purchased my refurb. Slickdeals website is where i found the coupon i used but im relatively sure a Google search would turn it up as well.

Unsure about buying refurbished? Well i was skeptical at first as well, however dell outlet offers same as new warranty, as well as the option to extend them. I would say the only negative about buying the refurbished model, is the lack of shiny box, and the no option for custom nameplate, if that matters to you.

Sorry if i sound like a dell outlet commercial here, just trying to expose you to a possibly cheaper option that you might not have known about or considered previously.

People hate them because the are now a subsidiary of dell of which they feel theyve lost the meaning of what alienware first was, plus the prices are a little crazy...

Source games arent really hardware intensive anymore and I would assume they would run fine maxed out, though at the time I didnt have any valve titles so I cant speak from experience...

In the end I decided I needed to have more muscle in smaller form factor and thats how I came to my sig rig, though now im thinking smaller lol

650 is a great price for the m11x, as I paid 1k after tax (4gb ram and ssd)

EDIT: I almost found no need of having an optical drive, and to be honest I still dont, I play all my games through steam anymore and have no need for it.

Though I did have one for when I wanted to reformat for whatever reason, Then that was for the OS dvd's but in ended up just being a perk to make the sale lol

Thanks guys for your posts and opinions!

DVD drives dont bother me I have all my Steam games backed up on my external and I can just install stuff from there anyways.

Battery life on the Acer is about 2 1/2hrs according to Newegg.

I'm still really leaning towards that M11x. Now the challenge is getting the money. I need to sell my old rig for a least 250-350. I'd like more but the HDD in it is old and 40GB and nobody around here would know how to change hard drives if I sold it to someone. lol
