Sandy Bridge Build, Help Please?

Thread Starter
Over the past several years I think I've made a couple threads on new builds, but they always kinda ended up not getting built due to money or school or me getting a laptop for college instead. But now, my dad said he will help me out on building this (financially, I mean) if I show him how to build it. He works with servers at HP and has been just using pre-built desktops forever, so he has not built anything even remotely current, in the realm of desktops.

Anyway, this is what I've got so far:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=13174152

Let me know if you can't see the wish list, but I think you should.

I haven't been browsing OCN all that much lately, as I've been caught up in school and helping my dad set up a little web venture he's doing with a buddy. So I'm a bit lost on the newer chips and GPUs. I was looking for some help on this new build. From what little I know about the most recent hardware, as well as a little bit of reading on OCN, I've put this together. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

I am not strict on my choices. I already have a case (Antec 900), a mouse (Logitech G5), Windows 7, and my dad has a monitor for me to use for a while, so I'm aware that those are not listed. I do not have any strict loves for Intel or AMD or Nvidia or whatever, so even though this is the Intel section, I am open to suggesting I go with an AMD build instead. I also do not have to order from Newegg, it is just what I'm using to find parts and build a list.

This will be my main PC, and I really want it to be a gaming machine. I have so many PC games that I've been given or purchased on Steam sales for the heck of it, but cannot play because my piece of junk laptop can't run them. I would like to overclock (for my first time), although I don't want to do anything extreme or spend too much on aftermarket cooling. I also may eventually put in another GPU and go Crossfire/SLI (depending on what card I get, of course).

If you are going to post a suggestion, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST:
I do NOT want to spend any more money than what I've already got on there. In fact, I would like to spend less, and I may downgrade some of the parts (particularly the GPU, although I do want a decent one) to try and get it a bit more reasonable. My point is that if you have a suggestion for a different component than what I've already chosen, PLEASE pick something that would be cheaper. I want the best bang for buck, basically. Perhaps if there is another processor or GPU that performs nearly as well but costs significantly less, then that is exactly what I want. Or perhaps if I don't need the 750w PSU, let me know and I'll drop to the 650w version.

Side question: I saw a thread elsewhere on OCN that said that the Sandy Bridge chips run quite cool. If I do end up with a Sandy Bridge, what aftermarket cooler should I get?

Preemptive thanks for any assistance, OCN. And apologies for the wall of text.

$60.99 + free shipping -$6.10 from HIBERNATE10 coupon code = $54.89

Better hard drive imo and will save you around $35

Also you do not have an operating system listed.
Just dont want you realize you need one after you have spent all your $.
And as a gaming machine you 4 gig of ram is fine and you can always upgrade to 8gig later if you find yourself using programs that use large amounts of ram. This will save you some $.
Finally unless you plan on going crossfire you wont need the 750 power supply.

I know I mentioned before that I didn't really have any allegiances to any brands, but I forgot about hard drives. I have generally stuck with Western Digital just because they haven't given me any trouble yet. That said, I'm still open to others. Does that drive actually perform as good as the WD Caviar Black? I hear most people suggest the Caviar Blacks as the better performers in the non-SSD and 7200RPM drives.

Also, thanks for looking out about the OS. But I also have that covered, sorry for not mentioning that too. My dad has a copy of Windows 7 for me.

[EDIT] I updated the OP to mention that I already have a monitor that I can use, and I removed the monitor from the wish list.

Personally, I would want to get a reference 6870 so it could be OC'ed better, but that's just me. Looks like a nice build there, although your PSU is way, way overkill. Get a 600w-650w and save the cash.

Ok, cool. But not that I don't trust you, but could someone confirm that this is true, for me? I'd just like to be sure

I also just now thought to add it to my original post, but I would like to keep the option of adding another GPU in there eventually, so I would go Crossfire/SLI once my PC starts showing its age. Would the 650TX be able to handle this rig no problem with two GPUs in it?

And why do the reference cards overclock better? I would think that a card that's overclocked out of the box would be able to overclock equally well.

If you decide to go down 1 level on the video card here is a 6850 for $143. Im not sure what the difference but its $100 dif for only 1 set down.

I had read on other threads that the 5850 actually outperforms the 6850. If that is true, I think I would rather get the 5850. Although the 5850 also costs a bit more, is the performance increase worth the extra money for the 5850?

Also, is there an Nvidia alternative that is about the same price and performance (or preferably cheaper and the same or even better performing ).

Also, does this motherboard support SLI? If it doesn't, then I may just disregard nvidia entirely. I would like to have the option to SLI in the future.

Cool, thanks. I might go with the 6850, it is a decent amount cheaper and would be cheaper to throw another one in there too. And I'm sure it will be enough for my needs.

Which brand of 6850 should I try to get? XFX? Sapphire? Asus? I'm not sure which is the more preferred or reliable brand, or which has the best warranty.
