Safe / Easy to install windows 7 on a Dell laptop?

Thread Starter
I currently have this laptop: http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/notebo...25&cs=22&s=dfh
It has windows vista 32 bit on it, but I want to install windows 7 64. Is installing an operating system on a laptop the same as on a custom desktop?

Also where would I get the updated 64 bit drivers for the ethernet, sound, video, etc. for the laptop?

I have the discs that came with it, but they're all 32 bit vista drivers.

dell.com
edit--or whomever the manufacturer of the specific piece of hardware is (i.e. sound, vga, etc.)
edit2--this should help also, see the part where you can likely use the 32-bit Vista drivers for Windows 7, provided you're using 32-bit windows 7. http://support.dell.com/support/topi...&isLegacy=true

Windows 7 should have most of the drivers for that model already built in. If you still need some drivers after install, try vista 64 drivers.

You will have no problem installing w/7 64bit on that lappy, same as custom desktop install. For the most part w/7 will have it's own genric drivers.

Although, to get the most recent drivers specific to your hardware i would run microsoft update scan or go directly to the manufacture's website of the specific hardware.

As long as it's not the T2330, you'd be fine with 64 bit. Core Duos don't support 64 bit OSes, and as long as the drivers are available, it'll work.

Are you sure? The T2330 is a 64-bit CPU, a Pentium Dual Core, the mobile counter-part to the desktop Pentium Dual Cores, like the e2180 in my sig rig--they have no problem running 64-bit OS's (unless the t2330 is a special case? I can't find anywhere that states the t2330 cannot run a 64-bit OS). They don't always support Virtualization Technology, but no mention of issues with 64-bit systems...I haven't run windows 7 on my sig rig, but it ran windows XP 64-bit just fine.

On the Dell page it said Core Duo, which I know for a fact doesn't support 64 bit extensions, I didn't look it up on ARK though. If it is, in fact, a Pentium and not a Core Duo, it should indeed be a 64 bit processor.

EDIT: It is a Pentium and not a Core. Thank you, Dell, for telling the truth about your products.
