Mix and Match

Hey guys, I'm building my mom a WHS box to backup three PCs and function as a media respository/server that I will sync with the media on my server remotely AND an HTPC that needs optical audio out (as her TV is HiDef but before HDMI was standard so she has DVI in only and the audio will be handled by her amp). The parts we have to play with are:
  • 1 ea AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz (Newegg)
  • 1 ea AMD Phenom II X2 560 BE Callisto 3.3 GHz (Newegg)
  • 1 ea Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB (2x2GB) 996557 (Newegg)
  • 3 ea Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 (Newegg)
  • 1 ea Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) KHX1600C9D3B1K2/4GXETR (Newegg)
  • 1 ea ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 Motherboard (Newegg)
  • 1 ea MSI 870A-G54 AM3 Motherboard (Newegg)
  • 1 ea ASUS EAH5550/G/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon HD 5550 1GB 128-bit DDR3 Video Card (Newegg)
  • 1 ea ASUS EAH5450 SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP) Radeon HD 5450 Video Card (Newegg)

Which parts Mobo/CPU/RAM/Videocard should go in which build?

I'm thinking Asus mobo/Athlon II 245/Corsair RAM/Radeon 5450 = WHS Server and
MSI mobo/Phenom II X2 560/Kingston RAM/Radeon 5550 = HTPC.

What do you all think?

Edit: One 4Gb (2x2) set is going into a box I'm fixing for my brother-in-law... I'm pretty sure his RAM is FUBARed.

Edit 2: I just realized the Mushkins are DDR2, so I can't use them for any of the builds. Anyone in need of a set of DDR2's and a Zotac 6100-B-E to go with them? lol

Switch it around. Whatever you do, if you plan to unlock, do not pair that x2 560 with the MSI motherboard. The power phase will not be suited for the unlocking. You really should just go with another Athlon II for the HTPC, because the Phenom II L3 cache won't make a difference. Only in some games. And with Athlon II, you save power due to lower TDP.

Actually xd, what's wrong with MSI and unlocking? My brother-in-law's build is a 785GM-P45 MSI board with a PIIX2555 that is unlocked and he periodically gets a checksum error on boot... is that because of some MSI incompatibility with unlocking or is it more likely the RAM (of note, I've replaced both the RAM and motherboard once each with identical sets of each to no avail).

It's not MSI boards and unlocking.
It's MSI boards and their weak power phases.
Ugh, they're cataclysmic and an excuse for death with power-heavy unlocked or x4/x6 processors...

There are a lot of members on this site that combine overclocked 125W processors (yes, unlocked x2s/x3s > x4s count) with weak power phases that themself are unheatsinked and not getting any cooling due to CPU power heatsinks - they are all endangering themselves and their house. Some people have learned it the hard way or seen the signs - that is, boards catching fire, going defective, or visible sparks coming out from the power phase area. MSI boards are the most notorious and dangerous when it comes down to their power phase. Any 4+1 with a 125W or higher processor is at risk, heatsinked or not.
