Since you had to hard reboot without shutdown, I would recommend first running sfc /scannow. Then follow that up with chkdsk /r. You can run them from the command prompt.

Google around and see if there is a driver issue with Splinter Cell. Lastly, certain 4xx / 5xx Fermi cards simply do not work (for some people) with certain motherboards. You can check compatibility on this list:

Good read. I did find two forms with the same issues. One was on the 580 and they reverted to 260.xx to fix the problem. I cannot do this. Second form, they stated reinstalling the OS. UGH.

I was saving this for last but i believe this is the only other solution for me. I ran sfc with no errors and chkdsk is running currently. You think I could get away with installing over the current OS?

I don't want to speak to soon, but I believe the problem was fixed. To keep the story short, windows started BUGGING out at one point (probably something I did). I couldn't even get internet going even though the network was recognized.

I ended up initiating windows recovery, selected the startup option, and whatever it did windows works correctly. I did notice some settings were reset in windows. The driver does not crash anymore. Driver randomly failing ='ed windows corruption somewhere. For me.

Thanks all for the help!

EDIT: EPIC FAILLLLLLLLL. The drive is not resetting like before but the desktop graphics are flashing and disappearing. An example would be, the CPU gadget for windows on top right disappears but the border or the firefox border. My new hard drive should arrive tomorrow...

Hope new HD fixes it. The Fermi cards and drivers seem like they can be quite finicky. Hope it's not the problem. Keep us updated.

I have an update. I found a very useful form topic that explains a bit of my theory on what is happening.

I have a lot of detail posted about my info with two more pictures on the nvidia form.
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...&#entry1189982

Update of what I typed from link above:

Quote:
After reading this topic has really taught me a lot. I have read else where about this Powermizer feature that lowers the voltage and clock of the video card to save energy. Hold that idea. Referring to the information about TDR where windows will restart the driver if it becomes unresponsive for 2 seconds.

Important: What I finally noticed for me. This freeze, black screen, driver unresponsive, and driver reset/restarted would ONLY happen when my video card would transition from the power saving voltage/clocks to the performance voltage/clocks. Refer to attachment 5.jpg. You can see where the voltage rises and the clocks are about to, there is a sharp dip in the FAN and all clocks to zero for an instant. I cannot check it anymore for the first card, but i did notice when playing splinter cell the card would alternate between 2d and 3d profiles. (power save and performance) I am willing to bet any money that this was the case with the first card as well.
If anyone has knowledge of something I or the folks at nvidia forms are missing. Please share!!!

So it seems after installing a new windows with a fresh hard drive eliminated the issue. The cause of this *I believe* is from the new graphics card operating at insufficient volts. My old card had an operating voltage of .988V and the new one is 1.013V. This was a problem because I had a profile saved with my old graphics card in Afterburner This kept reverting the settings to the old graphics card.

Before installing windows the only thing I did not eliminate was the PSU. This seems to be running correctly now. That makes me wonder about a possible solution for other people having this same problem. Try upping you GPU core voltage by .1 or .05 at a time to see if this fixes the problem.

Hopefully this thread and the one at nvidia forms I linked will save other OCN people from countless hours of reading and banging the head on a wall regarding this TDR and/or powermizer problem.
