Corsair 950W TX *PROBLEM*

Thread Starter
So I bought a Corsair 950W TX, and it squeals. The only new part is the Corsair power supply, otherwise everything in the system is the same. It's the one in my signature (the old power supply is currently listed).

The squealing is only audible (or only exists) when my computer has booted up past BIOS and into Windows 7. It goes away when my graphics card is doing something more intensive.

What should I do? RMA it? Is there a way to get this high pitched squeal to go away? It reminds me of my old Dell m1210 laptop which had a squealing problem when power saving was on.

Additionally, is it normal for a power supply to have some sort of creamy white-ish goop on parts of it (I saw that when I was installing it). I looked inside, and one of those rings with the copper twirled around it had a big glob of what looked like a white-ish cream.

Yes the "white goop" is supposed to be there. It keeps coils and other things from moving during shipping.

As for the whine you're hearing, it's most likely coil whine which effects some units. You can try to RMA the unit.

Thanks for the knowledgeable response. VERY helpful

Tomorrow I'll be returning the unit to NCIX, whether or not a 15% restocking fee is charged I don't quite care (well, I don't want to have to pay $22 restocking, but if it means no more squealing then that's my plan).

This is the second return I've had to do on this new computer (I must be a bad luck magnet). The other one was a constantly crashing GTX 460 (the 6970 has been awesome in its place).

I'm thinking of a Cougar 850W Modular Silver-rated power supply, but I'm not sure. Is that an alright brand? And would that be alright (would it support overclocking and a second 6970... or is 850W not enough)?

The Cougar GX units are good, Idk about the others.

A 750w Strider Plus 750w, Antec TruePower New 750w, or XFX BE 750w would be a good choice from NCIX.

A decent 850w is enough (Even a 750w would be enough for a 6970 crossfire)

Go for an XFX 850w Black Edition, or a Corsair HX850 Or even a Corsair AX850

Alright, well I'll be trying to get the XFX 850W tomorrow (one in stock... cross fingers it doesn't go out of stock later in the day). Also crossing fingers my return goes well.

I had the 750W but I gave it to my dad for his work computer (overkill he didn't need it, but he needed a new power supply so he bought it off me, it was a day old).

I've got the XFX 750w Black Edition powering an i7 2600k @ 4.8Ghz, an HD5970 @ 900/1300, and a GTX460 @ 900/1800 (Core/Shader) and it doesn't struggle at all!

And I hear no coil whine from the PSU, sadly, just from the GTX460 But that's because of the heavy load on Folding@Home and the heavy OC I've done, on gaming it doesn't coil at all.

And the PSU didn't coil whine at all ever since I have it since September 2010.

Yeh it's funny that I had that exact PSU and I gave it up to upgrade to the 950W... I should've stuck with it. I'll get the 850W version of it just for an upgrade path *just incase*. If it's not in stock I'll get a 750W and say screw it.

The XFX 750w BE would be enough for your rig, even if you wanted to add a 2nd 6970 in future.

Oh and, we got a similar rig

Wow very similar rig. . Jealous of your case though (well, I like mine actually, it's just the Antec cases seem a little cookie-cutterish and not great with cables... love the airflow).

We differ on the cooler (just got an h70... the thing is so huge I can't fit the side-panel fan on my case anymore lol).

Strikingly similar builds though wow... now that you point it out

I think for the 6970's though, I hate stressing things just at the edge. I think I should probably get 850W just to be safe. Idk. I guess I'll sleep on it.

Thanks for the help
