short stroking a raid...

does short stroking give a performance boost if you only have a few 100gb's on a drive and then use a program that moves all the data to the end of the platter as shown below? that bar in the middle is system volume information....wish i could change where its stored as its unmovable. would that have a performance decrease on the system as there is data stored that high up?

High, you logic seems to be sound. The head is situated on the side so any data that is nearest to it is fastest to be accessed. It therefore goes that information towards the outside of the platter is always read faster.

If you indeed had a program that shifted your information to the outer edge it would make your applications on that drive respond faster.

However a short stroke is the actual creation of a partition that confines all information on that partition to the outer 10%(ideally). Consequently, this is even faster than just rearranging information because there are many checks and diagnostics being run in every program being executed and the head sometimes moves the entire width of the platter. With a true short stroke(partition) you wont have that problem since the rest of the drive is not included in the partition.

oh ok, i didnt realise the head would move any further than where the data is situated! i may short stroke to 300gb of my 2tb then if you think it will give a bit of a boost

Yes, you see it all depends on the program being used. For programs like games you may not see any difference because the hard drive is confined to looking up files within a specific folder. But for a program like Photoshop that draws on a lot of the operating systems' resources, you will definitely see an increase.

i may redo it then in fairness all i do is game BUT i dont want the possibility that sometimes the head is moving further, is it possible to create 2 different raid partitions with different sizes? i was thinking of doing a 20gb partition with a 4kb stripe size for the os and then another 300gb partition of 128kb stripe size for everything else, is that possible or not?

Unfortunately, that depends on the RAID controller, you should refer to your motherboard manual or specs. I know the older nvidia raid controllers did not support two separate raid stripe sizes. However you may create different sized partitions of course.

4kb may be a bit too small for your OS and this will result in an increase in CPU overhead(assuming you are using the onboard raid controller).
