Would it be better to use an Optical or Coax cable to my z-5500 from my Asus P6T Deluxe V2 or stick to Analog?

If you want surround sound in games you need to use analog.

Analog: your sound card does the decoding.
Optical: The control pod does the decoding.

The quality of the speakers is such that optical sounds just as good as a dedicated sound card.

I've only found a couple games that did not work with my speakers via optical, and switching to analog didn't fix the problem. :/

Try both and see if there's a sound difference. I'd go optical.
