Recommend me a Blu-Ray Drive

Thread Starter
Looking for a Blu-Ray Drive so I can watch Blu-Ray while on my PC (this is for a new build). And I will have two monitors.

Thus I need a recommendation for a Blu Ray drive as well as software to play Blu Ray discs.

As far as hardware goes I found this LG , this Samsung, and this Lite-On on the Egg.

Good to know. However, after tax and either gas money or additional shipping I might as well gone with the Egg. However, I guess either way this steers me towards the the Samsung model.

Now if there was a way to use VLC to play blu ray without issues.

First off are you looking for just a drive or a burner? If just a driver new egg has a real nice samsung. For a burner I just bought the $80 LG from new egg. Once I get my computer together later this week I'll let you know how it is.

Doubt I am looking for a burner as the media is too expensive. Mostly looking to watch Blu Ray on computer and perhaps rip my collection to a digital format so I can stream it any time I want.

VLC cannot play BD and no other FOSS player can either, at least as of now. PowerDVD is the only one I can think of off hand worth noting.

Be warned that with new BD releases you'll need to wait for software updates in order to play your BD-due to Sony continually changing and updating the BD encryption....I've also read of sometimes video drivers and BD software players not getting along. You also need HDCP compliant video hardware-though if your gear is at all recent, odds are you already are.

I'm hoping BD is just a fad that will get quickly relegated to history. As it is far too much of a PITA for me to want to deal with.

I have the Samsung drive and I think it is better quality than my PS3. The black levels seem a lot sharper with significantly less noise.

So with that said I would recommend the Samsung drive.

Like mentioned there is no free software that plays Blu-Ray just yet, and OEM drives don't come with a software package included.

I use PowerDVD 10 and I have had no problems with it what so ever, with any of my Blu-Rays.

I use Arcsoft Total Media Theater 3 and have no problems playing new releases. My drive's firmware hasn't had a update in over a year and TMT3 hasn't had a patch in months, and yet recent release play just fine. No problems with GPU drivers either.
