Really? I could of swore that ATi were the first ones to have Tesselation, and they had it on cards I think 9~10 months before nVidia came out with a single card to include Tesselation. So after all the DirectX 11 patching and nVidia's extremely long development/production phase of a card incorporating software technology later than its competitor, I should hope it was better than ATi's card first swing at Tesselation. I also know that Tesselation wise, AMD's newer cards the 6850/6870s, although not as raw powerful as the 4xx series cards, was able to defeat nVidia and itself on pure Tesselation benchmarks. Furthermore, the 6970/6950 series cards utilizes same Tesselation optimizations while increasing raw performance by way of architectural differences have increased its lead in Tess performance. While nVidia has fantastic overall performance, high levels of Tesselation do tax the Geforces considerably (including the 580s) and Tesselation isolated benchmarks have shown this.
As far as software improving Tesselation performance 100%, I seriously doubt it, unless they somehow fubared the first release.
