I feel....left out/stupid

Hey all. I'm new to the forums, so I didn't know any better.

So I haven't built a computer in about 5 years. I've been using a Mac ever since (lets not dwell on that) So I decided to get back into the PC fold. I haven't been keeping up on the "IN CROWD" things to get for my computer. So I figured, Oh this Phenom II x4 945 3.0 Ghz is good. I built this computer a couple weeks ago. So I start doing some gaming and things are running smoother than ever.

I then bought DC Universe online. Things weren't going so swell, but really not much of a fault on my rig being that half of the DCUO crowd is experiencing crashing as well.So I say, "Lets go ahead and try to overclock this sucka!" I've never OC-ed before.

Upon doing research I don't see my model of Phenom II on the OC stats listings. Seems like ever model EXCEPT for mine. SO, I'm like *** did I get a subpar Phenom? Yeah I did the whole 4 core unlocker thing, but in looking at the charts, my 945 seems to be the least popular. Is is because it can't be 6 core unlocked? What is it? Oh, and I have the 125w version. What gives?

Its a quad core... nothing more. Turn core unlocker off.

Also, your CPU isnt a black edition, which has an unlocked multiplier for easier overclocking (or lazy people like me lol)

First step: Turn off Cool and Quiet, its just an annoyance when overclocking.

Also, it might take 1.5v or so to get it to 3.8ghz, so dont get discouraged if its unstable at a lower vcore.

125w version is not the c3, it is the older one before the die shrink( I think). Did you purchase it new or used?

I purchased this new. So, I'm thinkin I got the least favorite of them all. Hmmmm, I mean it works good, but for that extra push on my games, this isn't the one to go with it would seem. 3.8 Ghz is a decent OC if I can get it though.

You can.

Or at least 3.6ghz, that would be a nice jump.

Need help?

A little help wouldn't hurt at all. I am not at my PC right now. I'm at work doing all this research and stuff.

The 945 is a nice chip. You shouldn't feel bad about getting it. It'll just take some extra work if you want to OC it since it's locked. I just yesterday moved from a Phenom II x4 920 to this 1090T. It was what I could afford, but I fiddled with it and eventually got it to 3.7, but the mobo didn't like it, so 3.64 was where it stayed. If you post on the Phenom II overclocking thread, you'll definitely get some guidance, even though it's only up to 940 CPUs.

We have a nice linux section at OCN too, so come stop in and say hi.
