Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB Issues??

I've been having some issues with my HDD:
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Before I added an SSD to the rig you see below, I was using the WD Caviar Black for everything. Everything was running great on the rig for a few weeks when I started getting some serious lag issues. I started going down the checklist of diagnostics: Prime95, memtest86+, windows memory diag, maxxmem, CPU-id diagnostics, etc. Everything came back fine. All my BIOS settings were correct and updated. I flashed the BIOS just to be sure.

I kept getting these ridiculously long "not responding" errors when doing random things: ie: opening a PDF document, etc. Just completely random. They would be under low system-load times too. Each time the error would occur, all the windows on the screen would stop responding for at least 30-70 seconds. Something seemed very wrong. I ran every hard drive health diagnostic I could find and everything came back fine.

I finally broke down (and went broke doing it!!) and bought a Kingston SSD 64GB to install my OS to. Problem solved. No more lag, no more "not responding" errors. I use the Caviar for storage and all other programs that won't fit on the 64GB SSD.

I've continued to run scans on the Caviar to see if something is wrong with it. Nothing. It comes back completely healthy every time.

I need some feedback on what the problem could possibly have been and if I should RMA the Caviar anyway. When I was running Win7 64-bit on the Caviar, I didn't have the disk partitioned for the OS. Could this have been causing the lag? Any other ideas?

What kind of SMART report do you get for the drive (SpeedFan).

Also, have you run a surface scan utility on it? (Something like SeaTools that's on the UBCD).

The SMART scans all come back okay, the short and extended tests. I ran Seatools and the Western Digital equivalent of Seatools. It comes back fine every time.

It's the strangest thing. My PSU has more than enough power too. You think I should just RMA it?
