Overall, I'd give it a 4/10. It's 9/10 for gaming, but ATI cards still don't have the updated GPU3 client, so they're not going to do much. I wouldn't fold on the 5870's if I were you. The PPD/watt isn't worth it IMO. Your 965 can probably push 5-8k PPD depending on the overclock.

Still, every bit helps the cause.

Thanks! I will be building a rig for my gf. I'll just make her's a temp folding rig for when she's not using it (which will be 90% of the week).

Any suggestions for a budget folding rig? I know there is no such thing, but any help will do.

Pretty much any recent Nvidia card is a good choice for folding. GTS450 and GTX460 get awesome PPD/watt. You could pair one (or more) of those with a used i7 for bigadv. Or if you're REALLY on a budget, grab an i3 530/540/550 and overclock it to 3.8+ GHz for another 5000-6000 PPD.

Very good... I will look into building an Intel/ Nvidia rig for my gf then.

This brings me to another question. I was going to tri-fire my old XFX 4890 with my even older Sapphire 4850x2 for the new rig. Assuming that your comment about older ATI cards being poopy for folding, these would suck too?

And if this is the case, would you (or someone you know) like to buy them?

Tri-fire is generally just a bad idea. The extra power consumption, heat, and driver issues usually aren't worth the extra few frames per second you get in SOME games. And they're pretty awful for folding too.

And I'm happy with my 6870, thanks though.

UPDATE: OK, I am going to fold with my 5870s in CFX as well as my CPU. Whatever I can muster I am going to use for this January Foldathon.

I hope you're running 2 clients on each GPU?
Running in CFX in this case makes it much slower I thought.

Thanks for the tip! Do I just set up separate clients? I'm pretty sure this is outlined in the GPU folding thread.
