Starting to wonder???

Does playing online Chess make me a gamer? If the answer is no then why do I have a graphics card? Aside from chess I go to You Tube, to watch old school music videos, I stream Netflix, I watch Blu Movies when Red Box has them and that's it about all I do.

Is having an Sapphire Radeon 5770 with Vapor X graphics card overkill/wasted resources? I have been considering getting the new S.B. i5 2006k and a board with Display Port built in and calling it a day. Makes logical sense doesn't it?

Well, your card is doing hardware acceleration for your youtube videos. And it's running your display, taking the stress off of your CPU. It's also working when ever you play a BluRay movie. But yes, it seems to me that if all your doing is watching movies, streaming netflix, or playing chess, that it is indeed overkill.

And there is ABSOLUTELY no reason to "upgrade" from your i7-920...which is also overkill for what your doing.

Well my current board has no onboard display connection so how would I see anything?

Well you wouldn't, which is why the card is needed. i7's don't have onboard display. You just asked if a 5770 is overkill, which it is. You could pretty much use any low end 4xxx card in your system and still be fine.

I find this a little funny sorry...

I love playing Chess my self... Nothing like a game of logic... It's a game... If it's constantly played like any other game, then you would be considered as a gamer I guees just like any other people playing games thumb.gif

haha, gotta give it to ya, there's some humor in this thread thumb.gif

I don't mind playing the odd arcade and puzzle games from time to time, it takes my mind off things and it improve's your logic and skills..

But a Fermi card is OVERKILL! lol, even a ATI Radeon 2600XT is suffienct to power a chess game tongue.gif

Actually chess software benefits greatly from strong CPU's when I play against the computer the CPU fan kicks into high gear and it really gives my CPU a workout.

Beside Chess is not at all an arcade game it is no less than the greatest game ever created and the best players are literally geniuses

Get a really cheap graphics card? A GeForce 210 could manage what you're doing.
