Thinking about upgrading to a 580 gtx

Thread Starter
So, currently I'm using a EVGA 480 gtx sc edition and am looking to upgrade to a 580. I haven't really used anything besides EVGA products and I'd like to know how EVGA stacks up to it's competitors in terms of quality, bang for the buck and overall reliability.

Upgrade to do what?
why you want to upgrade? i think youd be better off getting another 480 and just sli... its cheaper and you double your performance...

however i do have a gtx 580 SC and i can tell you it runs cooler than the 480, and quieter, however i dont know how loud the 480 is cause when i play BC2 all i hear is the turbine of this card go off... its pretty loud... my old 5970 was watercooled so i never heard the noise... only waiting a couple of weeks before i wc this one too...

I don't think you should upgrade to a GTX 580 (you would see at most a 10% increase). If you want more performance, then you should simply get another GTX 480 and SLI both of them.

I usually think highly of EVGA products, but they tend to be a bit pricier than competitors.

That's an absurdly priced side-grade. Why not go SLi or get some decent cooling a la water perhaps?

Technically the sli would give better results but practically (ONLY IF YOU MUST UPGRADE, WHICH I DON'T SEE ANY REASON FOR YOU TO DO RIGHT NOW) it would be much harder to sell two 480s in the coming days (which you will do "ONCE" proper tessellation enabled games are out) . But if you sell it now and get a 580, it would be future proof.

Well I would Like to use SLI 480's but I'm not sure that my psu can handle it. I should probably also add that I'm using the 480 in a build for a friend (I'm almost getting full retail back for it).

The tessellation performance of the 480 is not that much worse than the 580

480 still owns very hard at tessellation, clock for clock 580 is only 6 frames better in heaven, don't do this retarded upgrade unless you just want a new toy to play with and throw money at. Kepler will be out soon and the 580 will feel like a piece of poo compared to Kepler, not saying that's bad because 580 and 480 will max out games for years to come, just not compared to Kepler .

Edit: I noticed you said you're selling the 480 to a friend, if you're getting $500 then do it, if only something like $300 don't do it.

Since you are getting practically full retail back I see no reason why you shouldn't upgrade. You will get a much cooler and quieter card whilst increasing overall performance. I have one and couldn't be happier... Well until Kepler comes out at least
