am i trying to convey that

1. This never happened before (iv'e listed all the changes i made to the system that MAY have taken part in the problem)

2. ive never used nvidia scaling, so i know thats not a fix I HAVE to use to corecct it

3. I wont be using nvidia scaling to correct it, because there is obviously another problem that I will just leave in the dark if I DO use nvidia scaling ....

Try this out. Run a game at desired res. It will come up with the black borders. Now use the monitors control buttons to stretch that game portion into full screen. Now, quit and restart the game or any other game and see if the problem persists.

Well, try it and see if it works. If it does its obviously a problem with your monitor..which does not scale properly I believe, so...

And I am sorry, I did not put the 'e.g' bit to underestimate or make you look small, I was just trying to convey a message. Please accept my apologies.

"reinstalled windows"

If you reinstalled windows and the problem still persists my bet is that it is a hardware issue with your monitor. Most monitors have menu options where you can force widescreen ect. Maybe somehow it reset to factory defaults or it's simply not operating like it was previously (malfunctioning).

And if Nvidia scaling fixes the problem, use it. Maybe in previous driver revisions it defaulted to ON, so you were infact using it without specifically setting it.

hmmm, i believe you two may be onto something there with the monitor scaling .... i do memba trying to turn monitor off wth my foot the other night as I was in bed and couldn't be bothered to get out lmao and I hit a wrong button .... good work ... i ll do that tonight see what happens, although I have fiddled alot before with the controls on my monitor and cant remember coming across any scaling options, only i think it could be is the "Autoconfig" button which i accidently pressed running a video in full screen ..?? rep + both for giving me another angle ..

I didn't re-install windows, never said I did...

nope your wrong with the in previous driver comment because, i have been into the nvcpl countless times (obviously) over the past few years and gone through ALL of the settings for scaling etc and it was never used or on....

My monitor does not have an option where you can "force" widescreen, but im feeling that the problem could well be down to the accidentle button press i did the other night on me monitor ... I will have a look

Did you by any chance update your Nvidia drivers before this happened? My brothers old 7800GTX (and his new 470GTX) would put the black bars on either side with the newest drivers. I believe that Nvidia did this to preserve the aspect ratio fr content at a lower resolution. I would try what Cee said.
