Looking for advice on my first build - hoping to hit 4Ghz on a 1090t

I'm getting ready to order everything for my first build, and was hoping for some comments/advice on what I've chosen. My main use will be for non-gaming - dvd->divx, avi->mpg, dvd mastering, converting vhs to dvd, photoshop elements picture editing, etc. Pretty normal for someone with small children.

The only game I see myself trying in the near future is Fallout3, and maybe L4D. I may have chosen a graphics card that's a bit too much for what I need, but I figured I'd cover my bases since I'll have it for 5 years or so.

I plan on picking up 2 1T drives locally & setting them up as RAID1, then grabbing a 3rd 1T to use as temporary storage. Then I can expand as needed down the road.

Here's what I've come up with so far - everything but the hard drives:

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

HIS H685F1GD Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

ASUS VW246H Glossy Black 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 ASCR 20000:1 (1000:1) Built-in Speakers

LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 24X DVD Writer LightScribe Support

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler

COOLER MASTER R4-BMBS-20PK-R0 Blade Master 120mm Case Fan (extra fan for 212+)

So what do you think? What am I missing? It's about $1300 as-is. My biggest worry is the monitor since I know nothing about flatscreens. Maybe I should go with less there? Same for the graphics card.

I'd welcome any input. I just don't want to make any stupid mistakes.

Thanks!

for graphics card i am 100% sure you will be fine with your purposes the only thing i am worried about is psu; i think at least 700watt will give plenty of room for expandability, the current one you choses i think wont supply enough with the gpu; your flat screen looks fine i have the same one superb quality; and i think your cooling should be pretty sufficient to reach you ocing goals. NICE build!!!

Thanks! Any suggestions on a PS? The next step up is the Corsair 750W, but I'm wondering if there are other recommended brands.

Get a better cpu cooler. Noctua/Thor's hammer. Get the GSkill rams with cas latency 7 (model number would look like this F3-xxxxxCL7xxxxx ) and lastly get a monitor without speakers and get any 2.1 speaker set (i prefer creative).

And if you are absolutely certain that you wont play gpu intensive games like crysis, get a XFX HD 5770 gpu.

$1300, hm? I've been able to fit SSDs on such builds with x6 processors for even less money than this one, let me see what I can come up with for you.

All parts from Newegg unless noted:
1090T + Gigabyte 890FXA-UD5 - $390
Sapphire HD 6850 + Antec Truepower New 650W - $250, $215 AR
2x G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 7-8-7 2x2GB - $130 [Easily does 6-8-6 - and 4 DIMMs + 1090T = no problem]
ASUS 24X DVD burner - $17 shipped [Unless you really need LightScribe]
HEC/Compucase Blitz - $40 shipped [Pretty much same as a Rosewill Destroyer, but 1 less fan and cheaper]
Hyper 212+ [Buy.com] - $27.43 shipped [much cheaper here]
2x Rosewill RFA-120-K 120MM - $6.50 shipped each [Use two MATCHING fans for push-pull (always use matching fans for push-pull) on the Hyper 212+; move the stock 212+ fan to the case]

[Amazon] - $8.75 shipped [Arctic Silver 5's days are long over; use this newer, better TIM]

Viewsonic 24" 1080p monitor [Buy.com] - $179 shipped (Much, much better monitor brand)
Windows 7 Home Premium - $100 [Trust me, you will never need anything more than Home Premium]
2x Samsung F3 1TB - $55 shipped each [might be cheaper than picking up locally]
Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB Solid State Drive - SATAIII 6GB/s, 1.8" [Buy.com] - $122 shipped

I managed to squeeze that SSD in without really sacrificing much else. It's up to you what you want to get from my list, I have added an SSD, hard drives, even a monitor. The total price of everything on my list together before rebates should be about the same... so without further ado...
Total price before rebates: Approx $1325
Total price after rebates: $1280

Some afterward suggestions I might also throw out:
-You might want to invest in a better CPU cooler to hit 4Ghz
-RAID 1 will hurt your write speeds, so you may want to only keep the data there but the OS/programs on a separate hard drive (or better, solid state drive, which'll outlast an HDD by quite a bit)
-You may want to go with an IPS panel monitor if you edit images a lot with Photoshop (i.e. it's your job), but those are usually really expensive.
-You really don't need anything below 5ms response time on a monitor.
-It appears the monitor I have chosen may be 72hz capable, which is a big benefit with many movies since movies are shot at 24p. You will get a much smoother movie playback image than with 60hz.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask

I have a 1090T at 4013 and like some others have said I'd most definitely upgrade the 212 cooler. I'd be looking at the Noctua if your going air cooling. I've seen too many post about Hyper 212 not being enough for the 1090T at 4.0.

Thanks for the replies & suggestions! Now I need to start looking on newegg/amazon & compare.

How about this liquid cooling system:

CORSAIR CWCH50-1 High Performance CPU Cooler

And this slightly lower speed ram with CL7 timing?

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7D-8GBRH
(not too many reviews)

I did some reading up & apparently lower CAS speed is necessary for successful overclocking. I need to read more.

I still need to check out all of xd_1771's recommendations (thanks!). I need to research comments/reviews of the Gigabye vs. MSI 890fx boards and remind myself why I went with MSI. I think there was a reason.

Great forum - thanks for the help!

You've got an unlocked chip with the 1090t, however. So while you're raising the multiplier on the CPU you're doing much less to the memory. You will however still benefit from the lower latencies. You're really don't need the H50 cooler for a 1090t to get to 4ghz, the hyper 212+ should be plenty enough, and a whole lot cheaper.

650w is more then enough wattage as long as it's a quality psu (Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, XFX). XD gave you a great start on your build above, the 1090t's go to 4ghz and past extremely easy actually, so I have no fear that you'll hit it. I hit it pretty darned easy and I have a locked multiplier!

In my place where the summer temps get near/over 38c, even the noctua looks bad at 4ghz on full load.
