Looking for advice on my first build - hoping to hit 4Ghz on a 1090t - Page 3

Good thing you switched to the Gigabyte motherboard...that MSI board that you originally were about to buy does not have a good reputation around here...The "I toasted my MSI 890FX-GD70" club. Yeah...

And if you are absolutely certain that you wont play gpu intensive games like crysis, get a XFX HD 5770 gpu.
The 212+ is a wicked cooler for what you pay for it. It kicked my H50's @ss price/performance wise netting only 4C higher load temps with the same OC I had before watercooling.

I'd go with 8 gigs, the 1090T,hmm....

yeah, get the home premium, you don't need the pro

why not go with some cheaper(like) ram ?? 4x2 or 2x2x2 ? it's cheaper by like $15
$15 may not seem a lot but save it on like 5 parts and you have ~$80

about the case , I know it's just preference but you can some times save on that too...
I'm not telling you to make a cardboard box case, thou.

burning dvds, hehe, you can get another dvd drive
Forget about 2x2x2; it will run in single channel and net you much worse performance than with proper dual channel by 2x4 or 4x2.

I found a new RAM deal recently: for $55 you can get 2x2GB of Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600 rated 7-8-7-20. Get two for $110 (only $5 more than the 2x4 1333 CAS7) and you're set for life. They can probably do 1600 6-8-6 as well. Hurry, the deal is only valid for another 7 1/2 hours!

EDIT: Realized you placed your order 2 hours ago. That's okay, still a great build and that XMS3 deal only popped up today at 1PM anyhow! Good luck with the build!

I thought MSI 890fx was supposed to be good, at least from newegg reviews. Gigabyte was my original choice anyway, but I was comparing the reviews and made the call to do MSI - figured they were both just as good. Looks like I might have dodged a bullet there - major props again to xd_1771 for pointing out the MB/CPU combo deal, the cheaper price for 212+ at buy.com, the f3 samsung drives, the monitor & the thermal paste. If I hadn't found the forum I would have just made a quick best-guess off of the newegg reviews. Thanks!

I went with 3 of the Samsung F3 iTB drives, but could only get the $15 discount off of one of them from newegg, so I ordered the other two from amazon for $60. I tried doing a follow-up order on newegg to get the $15 off, but it wouldn't let me use the code again on a separate order - doh.

Thanks for the help! I feel a lot better about it now that I'm seeing positive comments about the MB/212+/monitor. If I don't screw something up in the physical build I think I'll be blown away by it performance-wise. It'll be nice to not have a conversion of a couple of gigs of avi's -> mpg take all night, or having the generation of parfiles for our pictures take hours. It'll be fun to put it all together & screw around with OC'ing it too. And if I need an extra cable or anything at least I have a tigerdirect/compusa 10 minutes away.

Plus I can try out Fallout 3 - I was a big fan of the first two over a decade ago, so maybe it'll get me back into gaming on a PC.

Looks like I have a lot of reading to do on these forums in the next week.

Everything arrived & the new machine is alive! One of the samsung drives from amazon was riddled with bad sectors & could not be formatted, so I returned it today & picked up a WD caviar black 1tb to turn into my boot drive (so I can raid1 the 2 good samsungs).

The CM hyper 212+ wasn't as bad to put on as I thought it would be, and seems to be rock solid on the board - I was able to pick up the MB by the 212+ with no slippage.

I ran prime95 for a half hour the other day & my temps hit a max of 38C, and temps are 18C at idle, so I guess I did an okay job with the MX-2 thermal paste. I'm ready to try OC'ing it now.

Thanks - apparently my bios version has issues with reporting temps though plus my case is open right now, so we'll see what temps I get when I drop back to the F4 bios & get everything closed up. I'm optimistic though.
