2011 $500 build

Thread Starter
Looking to do a cheap $500 build for my parents.

They would only use it for everyday web browsing, simple word processing, etc. However i wouldn't mind a decent vid card for the few times i stay over and wanna play WoW maxed out.

With that said, what would a 2011 $500 build consist of? The last time i looked into this, the i7's, i5's and i3's had just come out (2 years ago) and people were suggesting and i5 or i3 if i recall.

Thanks for the help,

R.

A well powered i3 would be plenty.
For the video card I would recommend at GT 240, or HD 5670 depending on which brand you prefer.
2GB (2x1GB) of ddr3 is plenty, perhaps 10600.
Case would be your preference.
A good quality 1156 matx board will do.
PSU should be around +300 watts; name brand is always a plus.
If you go with Linux you'll save yourself some money, otherwise I'd go for Win7 OEM.

well i would presume a motherboard that had 6gps sata connections, usb 3.0 possibly sata 3 connections, (most of this stuff still isn't the "norm" for most mother boards yet) obviously i would probably chose hd radeon 5xxx series if you wan some quality graphics; i mean a sound card is optional but i highly doubt your parents will need it; most likely the build should also consist of blu ray reader writter, and for cpu all up to you i recommend the i7 sandybridge as being better that the previous i7's but that is a very debatable topic. hope i helped

The 640 is a quad core.
The i3 is faster per core and will use less energy than the x4.

but overall the x4 is faster (per core too unless you buy a higher end i3) and it will only use like 20w less which really isnt much.

Its also better for the future and better for multitasking

If you wanted to you could just switch out the cpu and motherboard and it would still work fine

But the 640 is a quad core, not a dual core like the i3s.

Something similar to this?

If you don't need the case and/or the DVD, then put the extra money on a better processor.

The new core I5 with a H67 mobo. The on board graphics are nice. Supports full HD play back, 3D etc etc.
