Problems reapplying TIM to 5770 Vapor-X

Thread Starter
Yesterday I decided it was a good idea to clean the heatsink on my Sapphire 5770 Vapor-X and reapply TIM. I hadn't taken the card apart since I bought it last summer.

I remove the heatsink clean off the existing TIM and apply thermal paste (I've tried both cooler master and AS-5) and reattach the heatsink (4 spring loaded screws on the back of the card).

If I put a thin layer on the gpu core then the heatsink does not appear to even make contact and the fan revs 100% at boot and will not display.

If I gunk it on there it will boot (fan revs on boot at full clocks) and then idles in windows (157 / 300) @ 45-50 C. If I load the card at all (furmark), the temperature immediately climbs towards and upwards of 100 C.

It seems the heatsink isn't making perfect contact, though I tried a thermal pad between the gpu and the heatsink and the card won't even boot with the thermal pad.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Sorry I can't help you with this one... Never experienced it myself but certainly does deserve some attention from more experienced builders.

Have you re applied all your pads? Maybe there were some on the VRM's or RAM or something that you didn't put back. Might be that the vapor chamber's a little pickier than a HSF.

You could look up some pics on google to check your alignment's right....if there wasn't a pad before and now it doesn't make contact something's up. Also make sure the screws are in all the way, could be they're just loose and preventing the HS from touching the GPU.

It sounds like you could have damaged it when you booted it up and got no display due to the massive overheating caused by lack of contact with the GPU. I'm not sure, but it might have happened. I would try Sapphire and see if they've got any ideas.

As far as I can tell there were never any pads on the ram.

It seems to be an alignment problem. I have tried screwing the screws all the way down, but they are spring screws, so maybe they just should be tightened partway?

I hope its not damaged (it could be), but since I can boot into windows I have not given up all hope.

Thanks.

You know it could be the springs are taking too much space. Can you take the springs all the way out? It just might work. But otherwise, that's all I know about GPU fan installation.

Cannot remove the springs from the screws, and I have tried tightening the screws down as much as they will tighten.
