why does everyone seem to think that 1.45 is a safe number for these chips?
Totally depends on the chip, a lot of i7950's are coming in real high like that. My latest wouldn'y hit stability at 4.0 until 1.36 that's terrible, but from all the reading I have been doing , it is apparently almost the norm. then again, it jsut depends on what you call stable too. I can play battlefeild 2, left for dead 2, etc for 10 hours a day no problems, pass 10 cycles of Intel burn at 4.2 @ 1.38v but try an pass 20 lines of Intel burn or 24 hours of prime and crash. These 950 chips are not living up to what they should have been. Not all of them. 930's are seeming to have the same problem.

I just bought a 920 today, found one new for $220. Couldn't resist. it hit 4.2 with 1.28v no problem. the 950 is hitting ebay tonight....

Yes, but isn't your X6 approaching dangerous temperatures at 60°C?

Actually your not supposed to go above 55c and 60c is pretty dangerous. I was a long-time Phenom owner. Check the OC in my sig, If that was stable under load it would hit around 70c

Also, do you guys think these new BIOS updates from Gigabyte will lower my voltage needed for 5GHz? I'm running F6x now.

EDIT: Running IBT now. 50 runs on max. So far it's done 11 and is stable at 4.8GHz with 1.28/1.44Vcore (switches between them). I have it set to 1.47 in BIOS, and once again it idles at 1.464.

My 2600k needs 1.500v in bios for 5ghz with Hyper threading off. Needs 1.530v in bios for Hyper threading on.

Maybe my chip is a bum too.

Load temps through an hour of Prime95 small FFT's is 65c on the hottest core. 1.5v is fine for me.

Not likely.
chips are different.
some need more some need less.
bios changes seldom bring so much new change to vcore.
I got a change with my new beta bios for my msi board, but even so it just matches my old one.
