Two crossfired 5850's in eyefinity need a few questions answered Please!

Hi guys!

I am new to this site! I am not new to computers, however. I have a custom built PC and did a bunch of research about eyefinity and do understand that in order to run eyefinity I either need a passive DP adapter->VGA input which will only work with VGA and two DVI inputs if I were to buy a passive one correct?

Now my question is, If i were to buy an active DP adapter instead of the passive one, will this enable me to run 3 monitors in eyefinity with 3 dvi->HDMI inputs since I can run one of the DVI adapters to my secondary video card for the extra resources it would require to run 3 in HDMI? or will only 3 DVI inputs work with the active DP adapter?

If I have confused any of you, please ask what you aren't understanding. Pretty much in summary, I am wondering if i am able to use the extra resources from the secondary video card to be able to run all 3 monitors from two DVI>HDMI cables on one card and have the active display port adapter on the secondary video card with a DVI>HDMI connection to it. Will this work for eyefinity?

Thank you for any help I honestly really appreciate it! I am going to be running in eyefinity soon and don't want to buy unnecessary items that won't work.

Thanks again!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking but when I had my 5850's, I used the two display ports and an active mini dp to dp from a company called accell. Bought on Amazon for $30.

Edit: All connections must be off of the main card. You cannot split the ports unless you would like completely separate monitors.

I believe in Crossfire the video ports on the second cards are deactivated. Just get a DP-VGA adapter. I personally ordered this one:

The one pictured is not the one I got, but it is the same serial # and has worked for others.

It depends on what your monitors can accept input wise. With the 58xx series you've got 2 dual link dvi connectors which can handle upto 2560 res. Use those obviously. The DP will need an adapter, they're all active but the difference is whether they are dual link or single link in regards to the DP to DVI.

The DP port will need a monitor that accepts DP, so if you don't have a DP monitor you need an adapter. Thus the question is what kind of monitors do you have and which adapter do you need?

If you need a DP to VGA, they are very rare... well the ones that work that is. Follow this thread for the part numbers if you need DP to VGA.

If your monitor(s) have dvi, then you need to use a active display port adapter from the card to the monitor, then use both dvi ports on the card. Also everything has to be plugged into one card for "grouping" to work. So use the display port to dvi/vga adapter and both dvi ports on the one 5850 and you'll work just fine. This is how I have mine setup. There are also various "active" display port adapters out there depending on your monitors inputs/outputs. I got mine for like $30 on newegg.

This is the exact active adapter I use ------------>>>> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-030-_-Product

Thanks for your replies!

Charles I liked your response a lot. Since it's an active display port for a lot cheaper than others. The 3 monitors I plan on getting are 3 samsung 25 inch lcd's with hdmi/dvi ports. With that active display port convertor it should be able to work with eyefinity if I use a dvi port connection to the dp right? So I'd be running 3 monitors with 3 dvi ports enabled?
