Loop advice for noob

Thread Starter
Hello all,

This will be my first water cooled loop. Here are my specs and ideas of part and how the loop will work. Please feel free to give advice.

i7 980x
Asus R3E
12gb Patriot memory
2x Sapphire 6970s
4x 640gb WD Black editions
4x 120gb ssd in raid 0

Danger Den RE3 Full Coverage Block
EK-Supreme HF High Flow - #1 CPU Water Block
EK-FC6970 for AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6970 Series - Nickel/Acetal
MCP655-B pump
16 fans with shrouds
2 xspc rx360
I will be using 2 FrozenQ Liquid Fusion Im not sure what size to use yet. I will also be adding in 3 3way splitters. 2 of them with drains and one with a temp sensor.

The thing I am not sure of is if I would need a second pump for this.

The loop I am thinking of is pump-temp sensor-cpu-chipset-gpu-gpu-rad-rad-res-drain-res-drain then back to pump. If there is a better order I should have please recommend. It will be in a larger case that is 18x18x24 (DxWxH) the board will be horizontal with a res mounted under the inner corners of the board tray.

sounds like you will be using a MM Accession case

you probably wont need a second pump but nothings wrong with redundancy...
as for the CPU block... it's not #1... if you want number one look into the AquaComputer Kryos
good luck on your venture

A single 655-B is pushing it, and you might not get 1GPM. If you haven't purchased your pump yet, I would recommend a 355 with an xspc top over the 655-B. If you already purchased the 655-B, getting a top for it will help out. The loop order looks fine though.

Thanks. That is the case I will be using, I wish I could order it now but sadly I don't have the cash.

The reason I was wondering about the second pump was the fact I wasn't sure if the water would flow between the the two res without having to pump it.

you shouldn't be disappointed with the case... i really don't know what the mcp655 can handle... but you can't go wrong with adding a second one in series

I haven't picked anything yet. The reason I went with the 655 was that I didn't need a top to get barbs for 1/2" id. There had been a post on a few forums that I have been two that the xspc tops were killing pumps so I wasn't sure if I should or not. If I was to get a top it would most likely be the XSPC Dual 5.25" Reservoir.

If it could be a problem for one pump would it be a good idea to have 2 loops one going pump-sensor-cpu-chipset-rad-res-drain then the XSPC top that is for dual pumps and the other loop being the same except just the gpus.

No, dual loop is never a good option. A single loop allows for sharing of components, and allows you to utilize your rads to their fullest.

I have only seen a few Laing pumps die, ever. Both 355 and 655 are solid, quality pumps. Have no fear that a 355 + top will die. You have a much better chance of getting in a car accident

The 655 is a worthless pump really. An EK DCP 4.0 beats a 655-B while costing quite a bit less and consuming way less power. Another option is the MCP 350 + XSPC Top, again it outperforms the pump while consuming less power.

Personally I would get the 355 + Top as it's more powerful than any of the pumps I mentioned and that motherboard block is going to be very restrictive. A 355 + Top uses about the same amount of electricity while putting out roughly twice the head pressure.
