STILL Low SLi GPU usage with 266.58 - Page 3

Black ops should never be used as test bed too many issues. If it doesn't work on your rig you're just unlucky in this case. The weird thing is that you're not really having issues in benchmark programs, but in games you are. Do you have all your Mobo drivers installed? Mainly just the chipset drivers. Do kind of debunk the bottle neck theory I was using the same set up in my Sig but with no oc what so ever and had good usage sli 260's. Or maybe I was just lucky?

The low GPU usage problem is mainly happening to the GTX 400 and 500 series fermi cards.

It's the games you are running. Not everything will use 99% of the GPU. It's the way things are optimized by the developer. If you want more usage then increase your resolution and see where it goes.

I only get 30-40% usage in BO with SLI and in Mafia II I'm at 99% constantly. It's the way the games are optimized/coded/programmed etc etc.

I know I built a rig for my manager specifically to play BO when it came out using a pair of 460's! I spent a week trying to get it to run right only to find out that it was the game itself that was broken. However there are lots of other people having problems that don't have 4 or 5 series cards. The game is just very poorly built therefore not good for trouble shooting or testing.

Thread Starter
I've tried everything the past week and nothing seems to be working. I've literally removed one of my cards and even running a single card I still get low usage. This is ridiculous. There's NO WAY I'm bottle necking a single GTX260 with my Q9550.

Here's what I'm seeing ... the left shot is in SLI, the right is single card. I didn't do exactly the same stuff both times so you can't really compare the graphs from left to right, but the general area I'm in (beginning of Executive Order level) is the same.

A couple observations from these graphs:

1) First and foremost, there is a 90.7FPS cap in this game. This will keep your GPU usage level down in some parts, just like v-sync will. Even completely maxed at 1920x1200, single 470 (700/1740) is capable of pushing 90fps in this game, on average only using about 80% of it's power it seems. Two of them in SLI just laugh at this game maxed out, so ...

2) The cut scenes and even just some of the animated in-game scenes (places where you're like stuck while someone else radios in to someone or whatever) act significantly different from the game itself at times. Not sure why. These may be parts that are getting CPU-bottlenecked, even w/my i7 at 4.1GHz. That, or there's just some weird driver glitches that somewhat inexplicably push GPU usage and FPS down at the same time. I would note here this will be FAR from the first time, or game, in which I've seen such glitches. In fact, something similar happens in the cut-scenes in Crysis, if memory serves.

Most importantly, though ... in actual gameplay (the right 1/3 of each graph is where I'm actually gaming, after all the cut scene stuff), the 90fps cap is for sure the thing that is most responsible for lower GPU usage, at least for me.

In the mp config file (call of duty black ops/players folder) there's a setting for max fps, if you change that from 85 to 0 it will relieve the fps limit. I just ran Fraps for 5 mins on fps and averaged 72 with my pair of GTS 450's, so you could probably get quite a bit higher with a pair of 465/470's.

That figure was after disabling HPET in the power management tab in my bios. Before with the default setting (HPET enabled) I was averaging 45 fps and 40% gpu usage, whereas the gpu is now being used 91%. Need to find something other than GPU-Z though because I don't think it's giving me accurate figures on GPU2 usage as the temps for both rise equally during gameplay.

You can download and use MSI Afterburner to check GPU usage.

Thanks. According to that I'm at 62% usage on GPU1 and 78% on GPU2 while playing COD BO.
