Need a CPU on a Budget

Thread Starter
I'm interested in making a budget build. I would like to know which processor you guys can recommend for light gaming, tinkering, minor o.c and some home theater. I'm trying to stay in the $50 to $75 range.

Pentium E5700. Essentially the same as the Pentium E6000 Wolfdales but with much higher multi. Should be easy enough to bump up FSB to 1066 (4x266) giving you 4GHz.

At that price range, though, AMD is really the best choice (particularly Athlon II X3).

This chip has a pretty high unlock success rate. Just get a mobo with the unlock feature and you've potentially got yourself a Phenom II X4 with L3 cache.

What board do you have? Or are you going to buy a new board to go with the CPU you choose?

AMD generally accepted to be better for budget builds. Good price/performance ratio.
