New build suggestions please.

Thread Starter
Hi,

I have been away from everything lately in the computer hardware/networking field. Im looking to have a new build and would like some help.

What Im needing to do with the new build...
-Multi-tasking (3 or more apps at once, no more than 10)
-Streaming music/video throughout my home network
-Running the comp. 24/7
-Watch HD video
-Possibly host gaming (not sure)

I would prefur to keep it somewhat cheap but have an excellent price/performance ratio.

Also I would prefur to have server processors over desktop processors if at all possible. Plus I like Intel over AMD but would be willing to switch if it would be best.

It would be a MUST for it to be future proof for schooling which will be about 4-6 years.

Thank-you for all the help!

Future proof for 4-6 years?
Heck my system won't do that!

Even Sandy Bridge might be a little weathered by then! smile.gif
What is your overall budget?

This might be a little pricey but for dollar/performance, ...
I would go Phenom II X6/8GB DDR3//GTX 460 or Radeon 6950.
Something along those lines.

The 2500K is a nice option but the entire build might add up to be a bit more then an AMD build, dual channel DDR3 is pretty cheap now and very nice AM3 boards have better prices, usually, as well.

Haha, well 4-6 yrs is kinda long but what Im getting at is not need to upgrade year after year like my old self...

I was far to inmature back 3 or 4 ago to have had the monster comp. I had at the time, I sold a few things and my rig just aint cutting it now.

As far as overall budget, I can't be 100% as of yet. However, I can say after the bit of searching around I have done, AMD does seem better for my budget.

Go with the specs that i used exactly..
Just get a more recent graphics card than a 9600 GT
I bought all of this (minus operating system graphics card and moniter) for 475. Which is a really good deal. Phenom II is a desktop processor but unless you want to go into opteron or xeon this is where its at. You could also splurge a little more and go with a 6 core cpu instead of a 4 core. Just make sure its clocked over 3.0 Ghz a core. Good servers do that smile.gif

Best of luck,
Andrew

P.S. PM if you want anything else I remmeber when I did my first build and it was hell week because I had no idea what to get.
P.S.S. 4-6 Years is a REALLY LONG time if you want to be super future proof wait a few months for the AMD's processor lineup (its like bulldog or something but it will intergrate graphics chips into the CPU just like intel did with the i5 and i7 which are extremely overpriced if I didn't mention... Though they are good)

Yeah, I heard about the new "Bulldozer" chip comming from AMD. The thing about wanting the server style CPU and not worrying about a GPU is alot of my music/video including HD video will be played through my Xbox streamed from my PC.
