Working with SMS

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I was curious as to the aspects of working with SMS content...

I've seen things around before where people use texting a certain command from their phone to communicate with their software...

Anyone know whats involved with this? or possibly point me in the right direction of research?

Thanks

I've looked at this, but I'm thinking there must be a way to do it fully through code?

There are applications out there that allow you to directly send a SMS message directly from the software right after downloading it...

I remember there was even a Windows Vista Widget that allowed you to send texts from it...

More the solution I'm looking into

By your first post it seemed you wanted to SMS to your software but now you are saying send SMS from your software? You send to your software unless you have the mentioned SMS modem. To send from the software you may be able to do so through email. At my old company I used to send out SMS notifications using a specially formatted email address that contained the phonenumber and provider. They are provider specific so you'll need to do some research.

I know that when I deal with embedding SMS into my code, I just use the e-mail gateways. It's really convenient and you don't have to pay for any kind of service or anything. Just sends an e-mail.

edit: Wow, beaten in the CODING AND PROGRAMMING forum. I've now seen it all.

The only way of sending sms "directly" is to use an Sms modem (or a phone) and anything else will be sending the info to a service that has.

What do you guys mean by "beaten"?

We mean he posted a minute before I did, and thus I repeated what was already said by mistake. Thus, he beat me.

Well I am interested in both sending and receiving, sending seems to be easier... I've found that you can use a private twitter account, and SMS tweet commands to it, and then your software just monitors the twitter account, and pull commands from it... which means sending SMS through e-mail would mostly solve issues to play around with it and have some fun coding...

You happen to have a good starting point to using e-mail servers to send SMS to a phone?

Cheers for the replies guys

I'm not sure what you're asking. All you need to know when you're dealing with SMS e-mail gateways is the specific gateway for your provider.

This will help you with that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways

e.g.

If your number was 777-888-9999 and you were on AT&T, you can send an e-mail to (7778889999@txt.att.net) and it will text that phone.

7778889999@vtext.com for Verizon, etc etc.
