Should I get a second gtx 470 - or just sit tight and wait for Kelper this year?

Thread Starter
I don't need it just yet, nothing I'm playing is lagging even on max settings with my single gtx 470...

But more is always better it seems, and I've got an itch to try SLI for the first time.

So the question is, should I get a second gtx 470 sometime in the near future.. If I did that I could probably just skip Kepler and upgrade once Maxwell comes out right? - Or should I hold off and wait for Kepler which should be out later this year?

This is what I currently get:

What resolution you gaming at?

<= 1920x1080 keep your single GTX470, it's plenty

>1920x1080 I would consider an upgrade, but it all depends on the pricing.

1920x1080 - sorry I should have noted that.

No current plans to go bigger atm, I have a hard enough time seeing little green men hiding in bushes without enlarging my viewing image (or would that help? ).

Personally, at that resolution, I would sit on the GTX470. It's not a long wait until Kepler, and hopefully it brings (like the GTX5xx series) another big leap in speed.

BUT, that's just me. If you want to go buy another GTX470, you will see a nice improvement in framerates, but I don't think it's worth it at this time, seeing how a single GTX470 pretty much plays everything on high EASILY.

Honestly, I'm really picky about my dual GPU setups, and I'd personally want a perfectly matching card. Problem with that is, the Asus cards that have been coming out lately have a pretty high VID, so they don't clock all that well. It takes 1.137v for me to hit 800 core on mine.

At 1080p, it would certainly help performance (moreso with a higher resolution). So it wouldn't necessarily be a bad upgrade. Just keep in mind that the current Asus cards don't clock that well.

I am in the same predicament but I decided against going SLI for three reasons. One, GTX470's are too power hungry. Two, they run too hot. Three, GPU's based on newer and more efficient architecture are coming out later this year.

That's only three though

I have mine under water so heat isn't really an issue, but it would factor into the cost of adding another + the block.

This is what's setting be back on going sli..
But for future ref. to me... I wouldn't water cool another gpu...
Too much hassle.. and I would have to sale both parts..not just one.
But yeah.. I am this same predicament as well.. and hmm.. after seeing more and more posts on this very subject makes me think hmmm
I've overclock my card to come close if not more than a 480 so I am happy.. however my resolution isn't 1080 yet so we'll see if it's in need of sli..
For a new GTX 470 plus block.. will cost roughly like 370.. and that in most eyes is the same cost as a 570.. which is on par with a 480.. so..
haha..
I wouldn't really just wait...
Kepler and others will come out soon...
