470 SLI Low GPU Usage Mafia II

Thread Starter
System I'm using is sig rig. I get an average of 38 FPS in Mafia II benchmark. A little ridiculous, I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers, and the overclocks are on. It seems like it's hovering around 70% percent on both cards. With my custom fan profiles they aren't even breaking 55C.

Any suggestions or is this just the way it is?

I average 30fps with one 470 so that seems a little low

You have your 240 dedicated to physX? What kind of usage are you seeing on that card in the benchmark? Does it get totally tapped out ever, or no?

Now, if you're not running physX on the dedicated card, then what you're seeing is pretty normal in terms of GPU usage because physX can eat up 30% of your GPU power in Mafia 2, but the usage for physX purposes won't get 'counted', so it looks like your cards are only at 70%.

Basically you really wanna make sure the physX is successfully running on your DEDICATED physX card, but hopefully NOT tapping that card out completely.

2560x1600 is pretty rough though ... 38fps doesn't seem that far out of line on your rig w/everything maxed out at that res TBH. But 70% is possibly a bit low depending on what's happening w/the physX.

Also ... I don't know too much about that board ... what's the PCI-Ex lane situation when you have 3 cards plugged in?

The problem is the 240 if you use it as physx dedicated.

It will make your computer wait for the 240 to finish its physx calcs before moving on, so your 470s can't use their full potential.

If you are playing with physx high, lower it, and it will be much better.

You should note that mafia 2 is an extremely demanding game for physx. Low cards will hinder the performance when used as physx dedicated.

I'm in the process of testing mafia 2 (and other games) over 2-3-4 way sli and dedicated (tho as dedicated I'm using a 580 so ) and the difference.
Once I'm done I will post a review.

Yes I have the 240 dedicated to Physx and SLI is enabled. I'm seeing about 70% usage on my Physx card and anywhere between 40% and 95% usage on my 470's. The PCIE lanes with these are 16x, 8x, 8x is what's listed in GPUZ. It was running at 2560x1600 with everything maxed out including Physx.

I will try it with Medium Physx and see how that goes.

Alright set to Medium Physx I got an average of 45 FPS. So basically I need a better Physx card. I will test it out with a GTS450 tomorrow and see how that goes. GPU usage on both 470's was much better as well.

Thank you both for your help.

A GTS450 will be much better.
Even a second hand GTX2xx will be fine.

The 240 just doesn't have the amount of cores need to handle a game like mafia 2

Hmmm ... well, it will be interesting to see how the 450 does. It kinda seems like if the 240 is never going over 70% usage that it shouldn't be bottlenecking the other cards, but ... I'm not sure how precise the GPU usage graph really is when it comes to physX, so ... I guess we'll soon find out. Be sure to check back in w/your numbers. Seeing the actual AB graphs from the runs would be cool too

Also, just an FYI ... there's nothing else out there that even approaches the physX demands of Mafia 2. The 240 would be fine for any other game that supports HW physX (to date), of that much I'm certain. So you probably don't "need" a better physX card ... unless you're really attached to Mafia 2.

Do you want to know the usage of a 580 as a dedicated physx card in metro 2033?
6%
That 6% usage, increase performance by 25% in FPS by using it over the CPU as a physx engine (980X at 4.2), when using 2-way SLI (and 7% over using physx on one of the SLI cards).
In 3-way SLI, its a 35% FPS increase (and 6% increase over using physx on one of the SLI cards).

I'm going to test mafia 2 in next couple of days.

38 FPS in the benchmark seems right at that resolution.

I get 30 FPS on my GTX 470 at 1920 x 1080.

Do note that the Mafia 2 benchmark does not reflect at all in-game performance...My average is 50 FPS on a GTX 470, PhysX high. Lowest I've seen was 40.

That sux, that mean's the gt 430 I got for phsyx won't be able to max out phsyx either.
