5850's run better in independent mode?

Thread Starter
i have a setup which has 2 5850's and thier attached via 2 crossfireX cables, previous to now i had used crossfire, and it worked very well, but i had stopped using crossfire to see the difference and the duel non crossfire'd GPU's actually preformed better in some stress tests....why is this?
