Todays equivilant of the 8800GTS 640mb?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build a new PC. Don't want anything to powerful, just good enough so I can edit 720p videos, play a few games if I want, use photoshop etc.

Back in the day I got a 8800GTS 640mb about 3 months after it was out and it was lasted me well about 4 years.

What would be today's equivalent for the power and price.

All I am really interested in is what I mentioned above. I'd like to be able to play Crysis 2 when its out, my 8800 could handle Crysis on Medium/High when that was out and I can't see Crysis 2 requiring that much more juice.

Just want a bit of an upgrade as my PC is on the way out

I would suggest the GTX 460 1Gb version or wait 5 more days until the GTX 560 comes out, also the 6870's are a good buy. all can be had around the $180-250 area.

6850 if you overclock, otherwise 6870. Gtx 460 1gb, if you really want to go nVIDIA.

Do you mean the same relative performance, or the same actual performance?

The 8800GTS 640 was released on 11/2006 and so you bought it around 2/2007.
At that time, the lineup of Nvidia cards was: 8800GTX (11/2006 released) and your 8800GTS 640 was the number 2 guy in the lineup followed by 8800GTS 320.

As of this month, lineup of Nvidia is: GTX580, GTX570 (~GTX480), GTX560 (coming out next week). So, if you want to get a modern day 8800GTS 640, it is the GTX570.

However, if you can wait for a week, I recommend the GTX560 which should still fit your needs but has a higher performance-to-cost ratio than a GTX570 (which is quite good itself, IMHO). There will be various versions of the GTX560: basic reference, moderately factory-overclocked and heavy factory-overclocked.
