Can I split sound in windows 7 (on-board audio)

Hi everyone

I was wondering if I can play games in my computer with audio and have my wife playing a movie in the TV, because i have to mute my game when someone is watching a movie.

Is this possible, and if it is, can i do with my onboard audio or I need a sound card?

I have two soundcards, but they work one at a time, I keep the onboard sound active as I can connect it to the front panel. I don't think what you want is possible in Win7.

I theory you can but only if your movie software supports selecting a non-default device (the game will take the windows default device), people have done it with games and Teamspeak, I know JRiver allows selection of a non-default sound device - I haven't tried it though, but I might now, its not free though. I'm not sure of any free apps that will do it. And there's also a chance you'll get a driver conflict.

I tried it and it works, Jriver playing a video clip fullscreen on monitor 2 with sound from the soundcard and black-ops fullscreen on monitor 1 with sound from the onboard. Thats with a Xonar and a VIA AD2000B onboard, you'll need either the game or the player to be able to select the non-default device (black-ops does, not sure of any others).

I know SC2 does cause in order to get 7.1 surround sound on my Gamecom 777 I have use the USB dongle. I haven't tried using bot at the same time. I gave a quick looksie at VLC to see if I can select hardware. Didn't see anything doesn't mean is not there. I have become intrigued and wish to try now too. Get bacl to you with my results.

I think I may have found a work around for media software that doesn't support hardware selection. Under Sound in the control panel you can select your primary source. I used this to set my onboard to my primary. Then opened up SC2 and went to the audio options and selected my headsets usb dongle and it worked. Now I assume this only works for games with hardware selection.

Sorry for the double post so soon. I assumed it would take longer.
