Though currently, the chips/platforms are not the biggest power draw; but the LCD's are. LED Backlighting helps this somewhat, but the LCD Market is stagnant.
Big players like Samsung and LG just do not innovate at the rate other industries do.
So Atom only stronghold is in cost.... and the fact that it is Intel.

The big LCD players are just too busy with collusion. Just a few days ago, another LCD company is being brought up on pricing fixing.

If you're interested in LCDs, have you seen this site: www.witsview.com

The name is the only thing going to save Intel right now it seems.

Hopefully they're next gen Atom platform competes well.

JF-AMD may be able to tell us the cost of Brazos system so we could compare it to the cost of an Atom based system; but I wouldn't suspect they are that far off from one another.

They didn't have a reason to be so stagnant about 2 years ago; but major innovation wise, we haven't come very far in awhile.

But yes, I also follow TFT Central closely as well.

Atoms cost $45-63 and I believe that includes the chipset. The Atom CPU alone probably costs less than $10 to manufacturer. http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollecti...rketSegment=DT

The atom is bigger (at 87mm^2) than brazos (at 75mm^2) In addition, atom is made at 45nm while brazos is made on a bulk process. From what I can find in Intel's whitepapers, the BGA they use has 559 pins. The extra 146 or so pins (brazos has 413) add complexity to mainboard design and costs as well. I can't believe that the Atom is cheaper to manufacture.

While I think that some of the power advantages are due to the half-node shrink, I still believe that Intel will be quick to split their atom division even more (one side going for even less power for MIDs and phones and the other focusing on making more powerful netbooks and nettops).

AMD new APU's should knockout Atom but I feel that Intel has that backdoor/behind the scenes edge that you cannot measure. I'm really excited about these new chips. I'm thinking about getting one of these for a HTPC. http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/19/c...#disqus_thread

Well, I am always skeptical of their pricing:

On occasion, we'll sell a combination of microprocessor and chipset and other chips at a price which is more favorable than if people bought the products independently. They have a right to buy the products independently, they have every right to mix and match products, but we believe that, relative to our CPU-chipset pricing, that there's no harm nor foul there.
As I recall Intel was selling the processor and the chipset for LESS than the cost of the processor alone. So, essentially they were freezing nvidia out of the chipset business.

But regardless, the point that everyone keeps missing is that this has DX11 and for a lot of embedded applications, having a strong visual experience is critical.

Brazos beats them both.

Which chipset was the Atom platform using?

It irks me to no end that Intel could easily make the Atom better..... They just need to pair it with a better and more efficent chipset.
Oh darn thats right I kept on posting the D510 is better.... zzz N550! N550 is the best of the Atom Processors, and its faster then the D510.

How can it be faster? It's clocked lower than the D510 (1.5GHz vs 1.66Ghz) and it's based off the same architecture. (Scratch that. It's the same die. The same 87mm^2, 176 million transistor die.)

Keep in mind that photoshop is probably not an app that you will find running on an embedded system and these things generally are not sold based on benchmarks.

Photoshop is indicative of what a System can do though; especially since it is an application that can take full use of CPU's and GPU's in tangent.
