[Anand] AMD Embedded APUs - Page 5

To be honest I really didn't understand the first iterations of Atom. What did Intel intend to achieve with an extremely weak CPU that can barely play H.26 video's? Fortunately they've improved their ATOM systems but they still have a long way to go, probably because they just aren't able to make a semi decent graphics chip.

At least now we see AMD's acquisition of ATI paying off. They are now able to integrate a good GPU with a CPU. This will force Intel to improve their design, which, at the end of the day, benefit all.

Edit: JF's name is really irritating, when I see it I think of

That's when you know you have a brilliant name.

I think we can safely assume that the first version of the Atoms were rushed by stock holders, they probably wanted Intel to get deeper into the mobile processing market before it was too late. Not a bad choice, seeing as things seem to be getting better for the atoms.

Yeah exactly. I think by Intel and AMD now having more competition between the two, and even ARM and others coming into play, the competition will get even more heated. And who wins when competition is increased? The consumer!

The Atom CPU is weak... but good enough. The issue is that Intel paired it with an old (even by that time) 945G chipset. The issue with this chipset was:
1) ancient IGP... Intel had the 4500HD which does decoding at the time but decided not to pair it.
2) obscene power consumption. The original Atoms had a 3w TDP but the chipsets used 25w!
Once again...

There is about a 85% chance that I will be getting this platform. I only need to see some benchmarks of this system with a few more applications and games once it hits retail, and then my CULV notebook will go on ebay pronto.
