Ask me a question

Thread Starter
I'm going to start doing a weekly FAQ for this section. So ask me any questions about power supplies that have been bugging you, and I'll answer the most common or interesting questions, maybe 1-3 questions per FAQ depending.

Shoot.

What is the meaning of life? J/K. I have seen and read a lot on power efficiency, yet I also see many posts saying that the actual efficiency depends more on than just what the 80% efficiency rating may say. When I am looking at a PSU what is the best way to determine it's efficiency assuming I am not over or under powering it (you can use online PSU calculators for that portion)? With the knowledge you give I want to be able to look at a PSU and it's specs much like you can look at Energy Star certified products and know what it's efficiency will be and what I can expect from the PSU.

Edit: Just read this from your sig. However, it isn't an easy task seeing specs for "DC output quality (ripple/noise suppression and voltage regulation) and build quality (capacitor choice and soldering quality), as well as protections sets and aesthetics/functionality." Perhaps there is a good place that reviews those aspects. However, when I am on the egg I want to be able to use the specs there to make any judgments I can in quick timing.

FSP, also known as sparkle power (not the gpu guys), Fortron. They've been around for years. I personally don't think they are horrid. The epsilon platform was kinda junky (wasn't good after 600w), but their other units aren't bad, they aren't anything too special by todays standards but i wouldn't fear them.

Edit: FSP still does a lot of oeming, Silverstone, OCZ, Zalman, and a bunch of others use fsp as an oem in some of their psus.

Does the number of possible answers to the questions, "What PSU/how much power do I need?", stretch to infinity?

Realistically it stretches to about 5 answers tops.

Infinity is possible though.
