Are these normal temps for my CPU?

Thread Starter
I just put a computer together with the intention of overclocking it but I don't think I have it quite right yet.

I've got an i7-950 stock with the stock fan and my case is currently sitting with it's cover off, ambient temp is 21C. Under 100% load my cores max out at about 77C.

Is this normal? It seems a bit high to me.

How much difference would re-applying the stock fan with better thermal paste be? Eventually I want to get an after market cooler but it's so hard to choose one.

Not very - thermal paste is only as good as the fan on top of it. Better to get a Corsair H50 or H70, they have pre applied TIM and they're great coolers. Your temps are normal for stock.

I was thinking about the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus or the Noctua NH-D14, but I can't find any information about whether or not my case will allow room for the NH-D14.

If its new, the stock thermal paste may not have cured yet.
but these temps are high, what is the ambient temp like in your room?
I would mabey think about resitting the stock cooler if temps persit.
