Maximus III GENE Heatsink Material?

Heya,

Does anyone know what material the Maximus III GENE or even Formula uses as the heatsink? I was looking at mine and felt it, even scratched a fingernail across it. It feels as if it's just some sort of heavy duty plastic.

I'm no expert on heatsink materials, but was hoping if someone else knows what the material really is. I'm leery on overclocking with plastic heatsinks =/ I know it would be safe to OC this motherboard in a case with high air flow but the one I am moving into won't have that luxury.

From detailed pictures it appears to have an underlying red layer with little holes in it. Under that I believe it is aluminum because I doubt they would try to use a plastic heatsink. Plastic would melt very quickly actually. I believe it is aluminum with a plastic shell on it. It could be that or it is the type of paint coating they used that makes it feel like plastic. My motherboard heatsink actually could be mistaken as plastic in certain places that I know is made of aluminum.

If it was plastic I doubt the board would even boot due to how fast it would overheat.

It's anodized aluminum. I have a rampage III formula and mine are anodized aluminum.

Anodizing is a process where aluminum is submerged in a liquid and electric charge is used to make dye permeate into the surface of the aluminum.

EDIT: If you were to scratch them with something hard like a nail you would reveal the normal aluminum under the surface. It could be hard to do though because some forms of anodizing actually increase the hardness of the surface quite a bit. I know lots of aluminum guns use this process. It makes the outside layer of the gun almost as hard as steel which keeps them from scratching and wearing down.

I dont think any motherboards have copper heatsinks (very few that is...)



A majority of them are aluminum and always have been, since its a lot cheaper and offers good thermal transfers

Ah, and thanks again! I noticed these got pretty warm pretty quick, but I think if I put a fan blowing over them they would stay cool.

I'm just used to the Enzotech copper heatsinks or the CeraMix of the Sabertooth 55i, so wasn't quiet sure what these where.

Well copper is a better conductor. The only thing better than copper is silver. However aluminum is the best when you consider cost. That is why most heat-sinks are made of aluminum. Copper is rather expensive and a silver or gold heat-sink would obviously cost more than the rest of the motherboard combined...
