Do these cards overclock well? If so, is ATI tool still the best?

Just wondering what I can expect.

I would like to know as well. I have no problem with CPU overclocking but I'm pretty unfamiliar with GPU OC'ing. Hope to see some good posts here!

The reference ones(with voltage control) overclock nicely 1000+mhz.
Msi Afterburner is a good gpu overclocking program.

I heard that 5870's can overclock like a beast, since they're cooler and require less power unlike GTX470's (whom can also overclock well).

Give MSI Afterburner a try for overclocking.

EDIT: You could also try it within Catalyst Control Center (under ATI Overdrive)

Very simple, and yes they overclock like beasts. Use msi afterburner for overclocking these cards. It also comes with a program called msi kombustor which is just a variation of furmark. Also do you have a reference 5870? Can you send me a link to which one you actually have?

MSI Afterburner for reference cards,Sapphire Trixx for non reference cards.

Use gpu-z to keep your eyes on the temps.

When overclocking its more important to keep your eyes on the temps of "VDDC Phase" and "VDDCI" as these will get amazingly hot when overclocking as they are responsible for supplying more voltage(needed for higher clocks).

I have had a few different models of the 5870. All of them (even my current Asus) have been to 1025/1300@1.25V at one point or another. I would use MSI AB to OC them but start small.
